Can someone please tell me WTF Telkom is on about now? I hear them spam it on the radio all the time, what the hell are they talking about?

I doubt it will make our Internet cheaper or faster. At least not in the near future.
These ads are more for branding, I think.

They have discovered "TCP/IP". They also think they are the first on the plant to do so. Bunch of retards have all but sunk the South African IT industry.

Shouldnt we all just starting to phone in to radio stations where Telkom advertises this much and explain the truth?

Interview 5 telkom techies today.
Ask them all about telkom's new super dooper.

They didn't know about it, but though it might be wimax or fiber to your house.

It so nice to hear about some nice thing coming.

NGN is transparent to the consumer. You will not 'see it' if I can put it that way.

It's got to do with the carrier/transmission SDH/DWDM environment. The SDH kit now can now do Ethernet as a layer 2 protocol plus some additional intelligence features & higer speeds. NGN can also apply to telephone switches but nothing has changed regarding that on the Telkom front as they are still using the E10 & EWSD switching gear but there is no need to upgrade that.

I dunno why Telkom is advertising this as it is not something that is exposed to the client and in all honesty 99% of people out there would not have a clue or would it make any difference to their lives.

The techies you see driving around would not actually know much about it as it's not really something they deal with on a daily basis.

If you want to get some kind of overview maybe have a look at this, https://secure1.telkom.co.za/apps_static/ir/pdf/financial/docs/ThamiMsimango.pdf

Look at page 4, Current technology and network platforms.
The future is page 5 but that is still some time away, IP MPLS based.

NGN is a pretty broad term if you ask me.

For the same reason that the banks make ads about puppies and fields of flowers and sunny days :p

Its brand building/feel good advertising and has very little to do with the actually products that they are talking about.

NGN is meant to streamline and simplify thier core access networks. All telecoms companies ar doing this and BT seems to have done it successfully. It is also meant to drive down costs normally associated with various access networks. So they moving a more 100% based IP network. But I doubt the cost saving will be filtered down to the customer.

And FTTC is coming! How long? Beats me!

Telkom loves products that never have to happen.

Isn't their slogan "Touch tomorrow" ?

Tomorrow never arrives.

Much like "next generation", it somehow never affects you.
