Telkom agent visited me now, offering R699 p.m. for 10mbps fibre. Can apparently plug in my existing analog phone.

I do want to make & receive voice calls, long and short distance: I have pensioners that I do admin for, I need to call them or vice versa.

At present I am a very casual home user (20 gig max), but this might change if I do get fibre and/or a nicer PC setup to watch movies.

I forget the installer they want to use, the papers are at home.

"Voice included in the R699 p.m. rental". Telkom service dept phoned me to confirm this. Voice benefit not stated on Telkom website (which needs some serious work). But the agent said I can verify this at a Telkom branch.

Two years contract, 100 gig cap, no installation fees, free router. Offer valid apparently to end March 2017. Don't know how/if you can topup after cap is reached.

I am a bit hesitant since the Telkom 10210 helpline and website have been cryptic & difficult for friends with their ADSL lines. But the voice benefit is nice at this early stage ... Esp since other ISP's don't explain one's VOIP vs analog options nicely on their websites. All of them can please work on this!

Fibre is definitely available in my street.

? Does the analog voice handset plugin thing sound in order - will they use some adapter you think, or can it be plugged directly into the fibre router?

? Other caveats.

When you get fibre installed, they will provide you with a special VOIP box that allows you to plugin normal analogue phones. This feature is called an FXS port. Once plugged in, your existing phones will work just like before. However, be aware there is one small difference. If you have a power outage, your phone will not work at all. So you would not be able to use the phone to make emergency calls such as to the ambulance during a power outage.

Hope that helps.

Ja, this deal is quite a good one considering my current cost for fixed line services and ADSL. I would go for it even though I detest VoIP.

The thought of losing a telephone service entirely independent of power is just too foreign for me. I would probably unpack that unused UPS 300W sitting in the garage and use it just for the fibre ONT.

There is actually nothing to stop the FXS facility from being built in to the ONT meaning a simple plug and play transfer over of the existing phone line.
