Morning,

We have had a "request" from Telkom/OpenServe to access our complex as they have 4 orders, and want to install fibre, etc...

Issue is, we already have Vumatel in the complex, and everyone is signed up that will signup, and everyone is aware that Vumatel is far less expensive than Telkom/Openserve in the complex.

Concern is, it appears to be a bully tactic to get into the complex and upgrade their infrastructure. Vumatel came in and wired the whole suburb, and it appears everyone is dropping their (Telkom's) services. Even though Telkom was in the area before Vumatel, no one signed up for fibre from them.

Attached to the "polite" email, was a form to allow access and a court order showing how they (Telkom) won a case in Centurion against another estate for access.

Has anyone else has similar experiences with Telkom/Openserver and their complex. This does not seem very polite or reasonable, and more of a bully tactic. The premise of the order, and that they will upgrade their infrastructure, is what this all seems to be based on, however most, if not all have cancelled their data services, and likewise their voice services too.

What is our legal position? We are very small complex.

Thanks in advance....

I think you should maybe speak to vumatel.
They would have informed persons that can advise you.
It would also be in their interest to advise you.

If someone has ordered then who are you to stop people's freedom of choice.
Have more than one option is never a bad thing

I agree completely. I am not on the BC, I am only querying on behalf of the BC.

The concern here is not freedom of choice or anything to that affect. The concern here is that this is not legit. The BC has no intention of preventing anything from being done, the concern is around the legitimacy of the request.

The letter will have a contact person's details on it. Call or email them and confirm legitimacy. Happened in our estate - After confirming the details and a site survey Telkom's contractors GIO then arrived and replaced copper with fibre or left copper in place and added fibre per resident whether they wanted the service or not it was installed. ie. The Fibre point is installed but inactive. The more choice the better value in your estate especially if it's already installed. We had Openserve arrive first and now Metrofibre are currently installing.

Thanks to all! Sent all the info on to our Chairman.

there seems to be some sort of confusion here - maybe i'm missing something.
Vumatel only install fibre lines , they not an ISP, they just normally lay the cables. The already been paid by whomeve contracted them, so they install in complexes for free.
You only pay to have it installed a termination point to your unit, you then go to whicher ISP you want.

Telkom won't install in only 4 units in a complex if there is no main cable.

Maybe 4 of your units jumped the gun and applied for Fibre from Telkom and thy there to instal ther termination points?

This ^^^

Probably someone ordered from Openserve (not as Fibre provider but as their ISP).

Fibre / Telkom bullying

Good day

I also live in a complex but my area is still currently being wired with fibre by Openserve unfortunately as I would have like Frogfoot or Fibrehoods but they are noet setting up as fibre service previcders in my area apparently. Nobody has yet as far as I know appied for a fibre connection.

However if this would interest you, Telkom are on the bullying tactics as they have done with numerous clients on the Telkommobile scene whihc is there cellphone network priovider and have bullied numerous clients in not allowing them to cancel their LTE contracts after 2 years and then as the client arrives at a Telkom direct store to either cancel or query the contract then they are told it's not possible to cancel the contract as it has already been renewed for another 2 years which is clearly a breech of contract from Telkom's end and is also illegal as I understand as I had found out Telkom is in major financial difficulty as we speak.

A friend of mine had applied for an upgrade to FTTH (fibre) and found out that his ADSL connection was only increased to a 10 meg speed as he was on a capped ADSL 4 meg line previously and still only is on a 4 meg line. H e failed to follow up properly to query or get his 2 year contract revoked and changed back or given a fibre connection in stead they gave him a new modem / router only when went to Telkom to query his issue regarding his false signup for FTTH from Telkom. They told him he had to pay in R1500 in order to fet out of the 2 year contract.

I am waiting for the fibre of a service provider in this case Openserve to becone live so I can connect to it as I am sick of this slow 4 meg connection and South Africa is so far behind with technology as it does not even offer any cable technology connectivity as the connection speeds are much faster even on cable if not the same as fibre but its a shared venture when available in areas.

Fibre service providers have each been allocated specific areas as to where they can have a piece of the market as not to have overrunning of fibre providers in one area.

There are fibre providers and then there are service providers. You can go with whom you please. Either Telkom, Vox or whom ever but if its an Openserve area forcresidents tgen you gou g to be connected to Openserve but you might upgrade your Vox contract or Telkom contract but you still only run on Openserve and the same goes for business connections. It might be an Openserve area for home connections (FTTH) and maybe Frogfoot for business connections (FTTB) but business fibre connections and contracts are much more expensive.
