Good Day. I am new to this forum and unsure if this issue has been raised previously. I live in Overport. My line is fed off the box at the corner of ridge road (near KFC opposite overport city). Most boxes in the ridge area have been upgraded to the MSAN box (VDSL/Fibre capable), however this particular box hasn't been upgraded neither is there any intention of upgrading it anytime soon, leaving us stuck on 10mbps or lower! I would like to know how many ADSL users are willing to take this issue up with telkom and demand (if they ever listen!!) that the box be upgraded as the copper in the area is deteriorating

How close is that MSAN to the actual Overport exchange building? (South Road, close to Hopelands Road)

Hey, I'm close to Overport, near Sparksport Pharmacy. Having issues with exchange congestion on my ADSL connection. I would also be interested in taking it up with Telkom.

@MickeyD, I'm about 2-3km from there. Do you think that's where I'm connected?

I have my line port number, maybe that'll tell us if we're on the same exchange.

The SDC by kfc/overport city he's referring to is probably less than 70m away from the exchange.

In which case the SDC will be linked to an MSAN inside the exchange building (central office). If not already then in the near future, as the plan is to move all DSL ports off the DSLAMs and onto the MSANs and then to recover the old equipment.

Yeah they not gonna plonk down a msan on the street corner that close to the exchange.

Good and bad.

Good in that they should be building a MSAN between you and that building in order to shorten the copper length.

Bad if they are not planning on doing it!

Thanks for your help.

I assume theirs plans are not public information?

Just one more quick question: It says that exchange is 10mbps enabled, but the maximus ADSL speed is 4mbps. That doesn't seem right to me.

It could be:
1. Your distance from the exchange (too far for 10Mbps).
2. Multiple DSLAMs in the exchange and you are on an older one.
3. Their information is wrong.

Hi, sorry to resurrect this thread.

When I was on my way home today, I passed what I think is and MSAN on Moses Kotane Rd.

Telkom MSAN.jpg

The red circle is where I'm currently connect to: OVERPORT (NDVT03) Exchange

The blue circle is where I saw what I think is the MSAN.

I live somewhere in the yellow block.

The MSAN would be around 1km from my house, by my estimate.

The exchange I'm currently connected to is about 2.3km according to Google Maps.

So my question is, can I ask Telkom to be transferred from the NDVT03 exchange to the new MSAN that is closer to me?

I didn't take a picture of the MSAN as I was driving, but this is more or less what it looks like:

It will depend on whether your SDC is linked to that MSAN or straight back to the exchange. If the former, yes and if the latter, no.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply.

The one I saw today is quite new, I don't think I've seen it before. Not sure if that will factor in.

What if I cancelled my phone/ADSL line and reapplied? Would that "force" them to put me on the unit closer to my home?

We've had a phone line since I can remember, but we've only had ADSL for the last few years. So I think my line would be connected to the NDVT03 Exchange.

Is there any way I could check with Telkom if there was a possibility to move my line? Or should I just hold on till all the upgrades and stuff are done?

Sorry for all the questions at 00:08 on a Thursday.
