and offered me a "Billion 800VGP" for *FREE*.

The oke on the other end of the phone tried to tell me some of the features - that he was reading from a list.

I said "what's the catch?"

He said "no catch - because you are a 'valued' client, we would like to upgrade your ADSL modem"

I said "what does it cost me?"

He said "it's free"

I said "and is there a contract to sign?"

He said "mumblemumble - 2 years - mumblemumble"

I said "So you expect me to sign a two year contract to get a *free* router - no thanks, haveanicedaybye."

As I was putting the phone down, I heard something like "thank you for doing business with tilskim"

I then did a google search and couldn't find a billion with that model number - so what's the scam, tilskim? Is this actually a Billion?

Could be that he mumbled the exact specifications of the router. ;)

Good on you asking about the contract, so many people get lured into their web... :(

Maybe the should try free Xbox. Should work better than a free router.

I doubt its a scam. If it were a scam, he would have told you exactly what you want to hear and he wouldn't have mentioned the 2 year contract.

Correct, and he wouldn't have said he is from Telkom! :D

Clarification post :

Sorry guys, I didn't mean scam as in classic scam. Wasn't thinking I suppose. I probably meant what are they trying to pull... has it got something to do with imminent competition?

Still haven't found any info on that model router tho'.

my guess is that they upgraded your exchange to ADSL2 and your current router doesn't support it... now they are trying to get you to upgrade your router so that you can test their equipment for them.

I signed a 2 year contract, I can't wait for it to expire, but I might stay on with Telkom, only because of their local BW promotion or BS story if you ask me.

No more Telkom contracts for me ;)
