Telkom probes corruption scandal; senior staff implicated

What's new in this country? corrupt as ever, nothing surprises me!

I worked there once-upon-a-time. Back to never-never-land.

Everybody is or will be corrupt when they find themselves in a position to do so.

EVERYwhere on this planet !!
 
wow - telkom being corrupt, I am soooo suprised. I mean how can they be corrupt. they are such a upstanding company, who really really know how to service their customers. Those security guards are the ones to blame. Not telkom. Could never be telkom.

I suppose the guarding companies where the ones actually stealing the cables.

I dont see how a suburb can be stripped of cables and telkom does not notice......
 
i had just finished sending an email to Telkom management indicating corruption on the part of a Telkom technician - basically the guy made it clear that he determines when Telkom will do the installation despite the fact that they technically can do so in 20 mins. Next thing I read is this article.

Royal Security is owned and run by Roy Moodley, a friend of Jacob Zuma, who was arrested last year for allegedly bribing a state official in an attempt to get a better seat at Zuma's inauguration.

corruption runs deep, throughout our country. and nobody takes blame or responsibility. its a way of life with the current government. sadly.
 
Now imagine how much Telscum can save by replacing those copper wires with fibre. hmm wait, that would mean that certain security companies would be out of reasons for taking big pay checks from their "brothers in arms". Ok so yet another reason Telscum won't give SA the opportunity to get back to the future....sigh

If they had to replace all the copper wire today, Telkom would be technically bankrupt overnight, as they would have to write off the net book value of the copper assets immediately. This is billions of rands.

Remember to install fibre is more than a piece of cable, it requires the transmission and power equipment to enable the signal to be transmitted back to the switching units.
 
True enough, but what's wrong with starting the process. Firstly in those high probability of theft areas, and by doing that you can scale down on those ridiculous security costs. Anything is possible if there is a will to go forward, but it appears that Telkom only has the will to provide for those few deemed to be more equal than others.

Granted, but your high theft areas in many cases is your low margin areas. Would you want your best network for a few low margin customers or for you densely populated area with high margin customers?

We're going OT here, maybe continue in the Copper vs Fibre thread?

lol no, I want it running directly to my house :) That will not happen anyway, so why not try to save cost on security by upgrading their network in the high risk areas. Yes it is generally in the low density areas, but you have to start somewhere. Imagine cutting those security budgets by 2 or 3 mil / month and use those funds to start upgrading the networks bit by bit. As they progress the security savings should increase and therefore accelerate the saving, which in turn can accelerate the laying of fibre. S

I know that is a rather simplistic view, but is less not more in some cases? Sure the crims will move to a different area, but it will probably be harder for them to steal the cables and therefore less cables will be stolen.

Point is money is being spent, besides the cost to security, there is the cost of replacing the copper once it is stolen. Why not rather spend that fortune on removing the problem entirely.

They do - they replace the copper network with a wireless network. It's called "Wireless Fixed Line Lookalike". They have been doing it for years already.
