Telkom promises to put customers first

We have been hearing this same BS from every single Telkom CEO for more than a decade. By putting the customer first, Telkom means that their customers are put first to get scr3wed, as hard as any consumer possibly can.

@Telkom: Please do SA a favour and dissolve your company. Sell all your assets and retire, you have caused enough damage to the South African public.

It seems as though every one knows what is wrong but no one is coming up with a detailed plan on how to fix the problem.

We have been plagued by erratic pings for months, with huge spikes and pings of 3000ms suddenly, from an average 30ms. We have changed our gear out, yet the problem persists.

Telkom dude comes, plugs his laptop in at the exchange, sees a ping of 39ms, and tells us everything is fine. Huh? I can also fscking ping at that speed, that is not the issue - what about the consistently erratic pings, and timeouts?

When asked to show my GF how to ping so she can test, Telkom dude says he doesn't know how, he has software that does it for him. HUH, WTF?

Yet, everything is fine with their obviously borked DSLAM, AND THIS is putting the customer first?

“Tough decisions will have to be made, particularly regarding costs. In this regard our immediate focus will be reviewing our staff numbers, optimising our property portfolio and decommissioning of unprofitable services.”

in other words they're going to fire all the competent people that are actually trying to do their jobs..

Maybe they should start by looking after the customers they have, fix congested exchanges and get 10mbps up and running!

Or they will continue to loose customers to wireless services.....

When this review is done, they will have another review to check the financial viability of implementing the result of the previous revues done with regards to reviewing the feasibility of .... Wait... Wut?

The problem with that is the technology on most DSLAMs is old ,so putting money in to obsolete tech. would be a wast.
Softswitch with the new ISAM/MSAN is much newer tech and one unit does the job of the DSLAM and the voice switching and is capable of 20 to 30 times the speed of the old DSAMs just a thought.
I know the roll out seems slow but i am sure things will pick up soon.

Every time I read x "promises to put customers first" my mind finishes the sentence as "under the bus".

In all seriousness I think Telkom should stop "putting the customer first" and start putting "the Internet first". A lot of Telkom's problems arise - as MickeyD points out - because of running too many technologies and trying to "connect" everybody
Telkom customer service problem is a legacy and attitude problem - it doesn't matter how much money you spend on customer service if "credit and risk" and "legal" and "accounts" and various other nebulous departments of an organization are FOS then it is going to seep through -> fix the organization and customer service improves, spend money on a broken organizations customer service and you see money go down the toilet and confusion. The bottom line is that the "customer service" routine means offering "premium" services which means higher prices, big marketing campaigns and far higher thresholds to reach market points.

Putting the Internet first means taking the bold decisions to foster competition and to open existing network infrastructure and to invest in new infrastructure in the belief that the networking effects and the insatiable demand for internet services will mean that more Internet generates more revenue. Afrihost and MWeb have made bold business moves that paid off for them, Telkom needs to do the same.

If they are just saying this to boost investor confidence then it is just empty promises. Also could be an election strategy from the ruling ANC political party and their alliances (SACP and COSATU) for next year's elections in SA.

don't make me laugh. :p

Last week when the whole neighbourhood went down the Telkom fool assured me repeatedly that there was nothing wrong with the line.

By the way, why does he need the street address if he has the telephone number?

So they weren't putting their customers first before? Blimey that's a surprise! And why I am not surprised that they will have to completely transform the company to do just that either...

This is good news. If it is true news time will tell I guess.

Just choked on a samoosa, dunno why as they've said this so many times before. Telkom does not have a clue about customer service, especially not in the upper echelons of the company.
