Telkom pushing ADSL

It's Telkom we talking about - we all know how idiotic they all are

Who cares about installation rates and targets...first make ADSL AFFORDABLE you morons..

According to Telkom it is affordable. (at least for their target market)
They have identified the 'minority' of the population as their target market and these people can afford the service.
The affordability proof for Telkom is them not being able to cope with the requests for new services. (just conveniently forget about the mass retrenchments for the purpose of this exercise, or our abysmal broadband penetration and the fact that their is no effective competition)
Telkom's obligation to the majority of the population is non existent. Proudly South African and all that rah rah.

Someone (one of the telecoms reporters I think) coined the very apt phrase of 'Digital Apartheid' through Telkom. Very true.

well prior to drastically dropping prices they have to make sure they have the capacity to deal with the demand. Atleast they are moving (slowly) to improve service...

prices are still to high! altho i must say they took just over 30 days to install my adsl.was working and online the same day.

ed.maybe this is a sign of improvement?

What was the figure that IS came up with as to what ADSL costs to provide? Was it just under R60 per month? :(

Well I think we'll all agree that they should definitely get rid of the ''ADSL line rental'' charge...many of us have said it over and over..that people can pay a once-off fee to get the line but thereafter the only fees to pay should be to the ISP that you choose.

What? Dialup accounts are more expensive..

15 - 20 % , Still on a 3 gig cap , this is good for whom ?

ok..

Next target...

1. Make current customers happy
1.1 Take Line Rental Away
2.2 Make Cap 30Gig

Wishful thinking!

IIRC it was something like R39 per month...
Really??? Telkodemonopolies claims to have 'always endeavoured to make ADSL available to more consumers'???

How is it then that Telkodemonopolies insists on charging the monthly ADSL Connectivity rental [what costs consumers the most and is effectively a double-charge], which prevents the vast majority of consumers from being able to afford ADSL, and considering that Telkodemonopolies refuses to provide the vast majority of consumers with a basic copper telephone line [pre-requisite for ADSL], combined with the fact that a basic analogue telephone costs consumers a hugely inflated R99.92 per month [that's before call costs]...

Then there is the ongoing issue of Telkodemonopolies refusing to provide potential ADSL customers with the ADSL Self Installation option - with excuses like 'your exchange does not support Self Install'...

Telkodemonopolies will never stop lieing - this company is evil through & through!!!
Is this not [so far] the single biggest growth in ADSL lines and ADSL Customers for Telkodemonopolies? - where is our 'economies of scale' price decrease, why are we still being forced to pay the monthly ADSL Connectivity double-charge???

Telkom basically lies when it says it is pushing ADSL as can be seen from my own experience as laid out in teh following extract from a letter I wrote to teh business press:
"It is small wonder that Telkom's landline business is in decline.

Quite apart from their legendary poor service, they cannot meet the
current
demand for their services and don't seem to want to anyway. They are
completely unable to give the customer any information at all about the
state of the project.

In my case, and I know I am not alone as I have friends in a similar
position, I applied for an ADSL line nearly 3 months ago. At that stage Telkom's publicly stated target was 45 days for installation and ICASA's target for them was 30 days.

Needless to say I am still waiting. Numerous calls to their so called help
desk, now located in Krugersdorp and employing 20 people, or so I'm told
and I hav espoken to about half of them, has elicited not one accurate bit
of information! The people are super and friendly, if a little driven by
their training/response manual, but the systems they have to support them
appear to be archaic in the extreme. I am told they have to sign into
four different systems to get the answers, with the then inevitable result of a
promise that "someone will phone you within seventy two hours". Which
never happens.

These good people are trying their hardest but the concept of customer
care does not extend beyond the call centre.

Sell your Telkom shares and stay out untill they get some proper
management with proper reporting systems so that their management can
see just how bad they are, good customer relationship management
systems and a new attitude to customer service. They can only go one way
from here and its not up!"

Still Waiting

Hi

I placed my order for ADSL in August. Telkom have told me that they are waiting port allocation in my area (the area is ADSL enabled (fourways)) they say that the scheduled date is March 2007. I am extremely disgruntled about telkoms lack of interest in meeting their promise of installing within 30days. Telkom also have told me there is no way i can escalate this internally or externally. Does anyone have an idea of what my next steps are. waiting just doesnt seem to do the problem any justice.

Grant.

I'm in exactly the same boat...ordered 17 August...was told that the port allocation should be complete in my area by the end of Dec...so we will see...

You can lodge a complaint with ICASA's Consumer Protection something or other department [for violation by Telkodemonopolies of ICASA's ADSL Regulations], so yes you most certainly can escalate it externally, however you would have to Cc the media in order to get a response|action out of IncompetentCASA...

30 days - my foot!

I just cannot wait until Telkom has some serious competition and sees its incompetent ass.

I have been waiting over three months for an ADSL line in the Joburg area, and every time I phone them to enquire, they sound puzzled, mutter something about installing a port in the area and promise to investigate. I am yet to receive one follow-up phone call.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to run a small business from home and am tearing my hair out with a dial-up connection that keeps dropping. The irony is that as soon as I exceed the limit on my account, Telkom is dutifully on the line, haughtily informing me of my transgression. What cheek!

I'm a bit ignorant of the technical intricacies, but I've heard that soon the Joburg and Pretoria city councils will be offering residents cheap ADSL or broadband installations and service. Can anyone give me more details?

Municipalities will not be supplying ADSL access in the near future - not until the Local Loops are Unbundled, but Neology is providing a wifi service in and around Hatfield in conjunction with the Pta|Tswane municipality...

You could consider alternatives to ADSL, for example iBurst or HSDPA if covered in your area, even a cellphone could be used for GPRS access in place of dialup...

PS: Desdemona, welcome to MyADSL :).
