Let me start off by posting my line stats:

Code:
SNR Margin(dB)	8.9	6
Line Attenuation(dB)	7.1	9.6

My attenuation is amazing but my SNR is horrible, my house still has ancient wiring and even this where the alarm used to be spliced onto the phone line and then cut off by a Telkom employee (the alarm has since been replaced by a RF unit):

Now my question is, can I have Telkom rewire the house and at what cost?

Try your local networking guys, they often do phone wiring as well.

I was hoping more along the lines of Telkom doing it seeing as I rent the line from them, going by this from another thread:

AFAIK telkom own the hardware and wiring up to and including the jack / socket. They rent it to you. So, yeah, if you want it moved, they will have to do it.

Having said that, I managed to improve my line quality a fair bit by re-doing all their "snap-in" connections with soldered joints, shortening lines where I could as well.

If your wires are faulty, telkom must fix them at no cost to you. They are, after all, charging you R150 odds every month for them...

I don't want it moved just rewired with cables that aren't older than I am, clearly the line is extremely noisy and it's exposed where the cable was stripped and cut off.

Worth a try I suppose.

Back in my ISDN days (pre 2007) I once had a Telkom tech completely rewire my office because of an intermittent line fault "to tidy things up and ensure all the joints are good", I suspect that level of service is a thing of past now :(

Telkom will do the wiring at no charge if it can prove that the wiring is causing fault on your service, just be aware that all extension you might have in the house will also be charged

They charged me R700 to move my line from one building to another inside my property, will probably classify this as a "move" and do the same... But moving my line between cities was free....

You can do it yourself if need be. It's very simple wiring. Or you can get a networking company out to come and do it for you...

The guys where I am are actually really friendly and knowledgeable, as soon as you use words like attenuation and SNR and they figure out you aren't Koosie from Kakamas things always go better.

I sent them a message on Twitter and will see what they say.

It's really easy to do yourself, all you need is some 2 pair solid core phone cable, a couple of scotch locks and a krone tool (you could probably get along with one. materials are cheap.

I can easy peasy do it myself, it's not due to a lack of knowledge/skill, it's me just imagining how my back is going to feel laying cable through closets and a part of the ceiling.

If Telkom tells me they don't care I will just live with it until such a time where I have to go faster.

I hate Telkom with fire of a thousand suns, they decided to ignore the fact that it's a physical fault with the wiring and decided to drop my sync by 8Mbps to increase my SNR.

Time to break out the Deep Heat and sort it yourself I reckon ...

If you dont mind the down time "break" the wire and then they will have to, since you are paying for it.

I just sent TelkomZA a PM explaining the issue, hopefully he can get them to reverse what the did and at least get me to my old sync speed, I'm syncing now at the same speed I was when I had 10Mbps.

I didn't even know Telkom had guys that work weekends, I just wish I could speak to someone (the technician) directly and tell him to lower my SNR back down to 6 and have my line syncing at 20Mbps again, now I have to wait for him to call me.

Thank The Flying Spaghetti Monster they returned my sync speed to 20Mbps, on a Sunday no less.
