Telkom Ripoff Fibre Prices

Why is it that Telkom fibre prices are so much higher than other options available. Worse than that they limit the upload to half of the download.

If you unlucky like myself our estate chose to allow OpenServe to implement fibre in our area rather than another supplier. Mostly because they promised a rapid turn around but in the end it's been almost 2 years of hole digging and digging again.

The result is expensive fibre on a infrastructure that can't deliver the 100 / 50 Mb.

I recently did a quick compare and to be fair Afrihost and other ISP's offer prices just as good but WebAfrica was a easy place to get these prices. In some cases Telkom is as much as 3x more expensive than other providers. Since they are not likely to change their approach soon all I can do is encourage others to consider the many other fibre suppliers before allowing Telkom / OpenServe into your area.

Well Telkom is expensive but you get an Openserve line somewhere like with ISPAfrika, Webafrica or Axxess and get data somewhere else.

And who else is going to come just roll out a fibre network by themselves?

I bet there would still have been 0% domestic fibre in Garsfontein if it hadn't been for OpenServe, even though a DFA main fibre line has been running through the area since 2013. At this moment 75% of the OpenServe fibre in Garsfontein is lit. 0 other fibre providers around.

So I'll take Telkoms expensive fibre network, rather than the flaky ADSL one we had, which was more expensive at 10mbps than the fibre is.

How do you not "allow them into your area"? Have you some method whereby you will prevent Openserve from laying fibre in your area?

IPC costs bump up the access rates for Openserve. The line fees are about in line with other providers.

I looked at telkoms prices and as an ISP they are expensive. Openserve fibre is sometimes more expensive than other provider but if they are the only option in your area what can you do.

The strange thing is on capped packages Openserve is cheaper than Vumatel on the 100GB and 200GB on 100Mbps at Afrihost. However they are more expensive on the 500GB package. This was when I last checked, I found it strange but what can we do. I was just happy to get rid of ADSL.

I'm pretty sure Telkom has realized they cannot compete on price and quality and have opted to go with the "Well they have no other option" strategy.

Given that they are the only company rolling out in many areas, guess that means they are entitled to their asking price.

Just get the Telkom fibre month to month and use any ISP you want. I have pasted the price a few times and line is around 900 a month for 100/50.

Afrihost just seems to have messed up fiber pricing off of the OpenServe network.

When Telkom can provide a better answer then just watching when the map turns purple I will care about them. Till then I will wait patiently for Frogfoot to finish their Lynwood build .

Not if you are wealthy and want 100mbps.

You can take an OpensServe 4mb fibre line for ~R699 or a 10mbps for ~R899. Just the upload increase and better latency makes it better than similar speed ADSL.

Before you can be ripped off for fibre, you need to be able to order fibre. Before you can order fibre, fibre needs to be planned for your area.

Ss fibre is not even planned for my area, I should be thankful that I can't be ripped off for fibre. Yay.

I pay R900 a month for 100Mbps. Of course then still my ISP cost but that's R450.

Sure other ISPs might be cheaper, but uncapped on an OpenServe line is not cheap. A capped account with nighttime data will be just as good for a fraction of the price.

What is the difference between the two prices at the top of the pic regarding port charges?
