I am in the process of getting a 192K ADSL line from Telkom. I used to have a D-Link wired router at my old place, but am looking at going wireless in the new house. I have seen most wireless routers with a built in firewall are around R1100-1500, but I went to Telkom today and they have agreat looking wireless router, with 4 ports, and a firewall for R799! Seems like a bargain, what is this router like? And what make is it? Will gaming be ok on a wireless system? And I'm also selling my D-Link router, it is the DSL-384T, gimme offers, JHB North.

Is this the router:

I have been using this for about 4 mths and have had no problems other than the first few I rec from telkom all had firmware corruption. It does not support wpa wireless security though (only wep encryption)

Also the wireless is only 802.11b which is the slowest wireless standard and IMO the range does not seem all that good

And that Telkom one IMO is ugly :p

I must agree that it is not the best looking available - however if you can get it for free it is not a bad option.

But then you must get a contract, which isnt a good idea

if you stick with the contract for 2 years, then go for the free router. just know that there is a penalty fee if you cancel..

Yes I took the contract.
If it a good deal or not depends on your personal circumstances
In my case I would have had to pay a total of R720 in installation fees plus purchase a modem - by taking a contract I did not have to pay anything unless I cancel. As the cancelation fee is less than the upfront payment including a modem and reduces as each month passes it would be stupid not to take the contract.

also, there probably won't even be any dsl alternatives in 2 years.. so who'd cancel any way! ;)

No mikef, that is not the router, this was a flat all black 1. Also it was 802.11G, 54mbps. And no,
I WILL NEVER SIGN A CONTRACT WITH TELKOM, MY BRAIN IS BIGGER THAN A DAMN TAXI DRIVER'S!!!

Here we go again...

DO NOT get yourself stuck in a contract, its BAAAD.

You should not generalise - please explain how it could be bad in my circumstances?

dont mess with wep encryption, its crackable, not that anyone in your neighborhood would do it, but a wi-fi router without wpa today is pretty useless.

I looked at the config options on it because my brother got one, and there's not much there! Not a nice router and its an ugly square box. I think they will be giving them away for free even without contract soon... :)

Hi Mikef/PoiZoNouZ,

I've been to one of Telkom's suppliers' website (www.telkomphones.co.za) and noticed that the new Telkom Wifi router (Telkom 5102G) is from their stable and looks almost exactly the same as the Telkom 5100.

Thanks - seems to be a rebranded Billion 5102G WiFi Router:)

Is that the one you are talking about PoiZoNouZ?
