My in-laws applied for ADSL for their business near the end of last year.

Instead of converting their fax line for ADSL as I recommended, my father-in-law chose to have their ISDN line (used purely for data) converted. No biggie - however, when Telkom called them early December, they told my in-laws that their installation date would be January 3. Since they would have been away on holiday, they suggested that any time after the 6th Jan would suit them better.
No problem, says Telkom.

6th Jan comes and goes, my in-laws phone and discover that Telkom had cancelled their order for ADSL. Nice.

A lot of phone calls (and hold time) were made, and eventually they managed to get their order re-instated. Yesterday morning (the 18th Jan), Telkom told them that their install date would be the 7th Feb. By the afternoon, their ISDN line had stopped working - Now they use this line almost the whole day for Internet access, which is critical to their business. So they panic, and log a fault with Telkom.

A techie gets hold of them today, and tells them that there is nothing that he can do because the line has been disconnected at the exchange in preparation for their ADSL installation on the 7th!

WTF?!

My in-laws have been frantically phoning Telkom and sending faxes etc, but have no joy.

Now what?

Chances are that the line has been converted to an ADSL line - perhaps a trial with an ADSL modem will show a sync...

Don't want to chance an ADSL modem - raw ISDN runs at 100V. A normal phone was plugged into the line, but there was no dial tone or anything.

Phone Regional Customer Care Manager on 080 060 0126.

Telkom screwed me on a daily basis about my ADSL, phoned and complained, chick on other end (whist i was holding), sorted out problem, got me a confirmed Guaranteed install date, and sorted out all the ****.

i had isdn for 5 years so i can say this with confidence, its obvious u still have ur isdn equipment at home, cos u tried using it.

plugging in a phone into the direct line into ur house if isdn is still connected will render no dialtone. but connect ur telephone to ur isdn box, and u will get a dialtone, even if its turned off, u will still get a dialtone.

if u dont get a dialing tone then they really have taken the isdn equipment out and then ure either stuck with a normal 56k analogue line or they have indeed installed adsl equipment at the exchange.

if u connected ur phone to the direct line coming into your house (even without a splitter) u would have gotten a dialtone (thats assuming u have no modem connected).

so basically get a 56k modem for about R70 bucks somewhere (even incredible corruption) and use the net if its that critical to business, cos telkom really dont care, to them its ur fault.
