I lost my SIM and being the fool that I am I bought a new sim card thinking the sim swap can be done over the phone MTN style and I was told I need to go to a shop so that my proof of ID can be verified. I went to the shop with the ID and the new SIM card I bought and the first shocker was that I need to pay R35 for SIM swap. Secondly, that can only be done using debit or credit cards because they don't take cash. I thought the R35 was steep (unless maybe its refunded via an airtime rebate or something similar) but I was prepared to pay since I didn't have an alternative then I was told the shop didn't have any SIM cards, and I couldn't use the SIM card I had bought earlier or any from other outlets because the "system" only accepts SIM cards from that specific store. WTF Telkom? Is this really true? For starters how does a Telkom store run out of Telkom sim cards? Can someone confirm before I drive across town to another shop simply because a store attendant was misinformed or they just want to jack up the SIM sales from their shop. I hope the store attendant is misinformed because if this is really how Telkom operates then the "system" is really retarded.
