Telkom slates current mobile services

They are killing their own product by their limitations...
I looked into a mobile data solution, just yesterday - just to compare pricing to ADSL...
They told me:
R 489
512 Kbps max?
3 GB package
NO topup
30c/MB out of bundle...
Also NO soft cap like DO packages and NO 30 GB local free :(
So close and yet so far!....

No really, lets compare to ADSL

I'm with telkom 3G wireless option.
R489 for 3GB of data. 7.2Mbsp but realistically I did a speed test and had 3.6Mbps. Latency is almost always at 100 to local, even durning "high usage times".

Taking cybersmart as an example:
4Mbps line, 3GB cap = R524

Already, the wireless is cheaper [and cybersmart doesnt include the R120 line rental fee]

So far, the issues I have with telkoms 3G is.. no way to see your usage online [you have to use the bundled monitoring tool] and i believe it's still nomadic (connects to 1 tower, go out of range you disconnect and the have to reconnect to the other tower - but i'm told they will fix this (or have already)). I've been using it since it first came out on promotion, and I have no complaints, the ping locally is stable, No down time, not congestion nor random disconnects.

If anything, it is a slap in the face to neotel, vodacom, mtn and cellc that telkom is beating them in service (for me at least)

I almost never get through a call without it dropping.
Suck on it cell companies.

bwaa haa haa , nothing like blaming others companies to divert attention to ones own efficiency and k@k services and high prices and poor speeds ,and limited caps , and loooong installation times , and non existent call centre etc etc etc etc etc etc.

I agree, I am currently moving over from 4MB Adsl to Telkom 3G and are currently running them side by side. The ADSL (based on 3Gig usage works out more expensive than the 3G, and I never achieve more than 1MB/s - any faster and then I lose sync. The only drawback on the 3G vs ADSL is the ping, where I get approx 60 ms on ADSL and only 250ms on the 3g. On download speed the 3G is king, where I achieve 450KB/s consistently.

The moral of the story - where else but in SA will you find better value for money on a mobile rather than fixed!!!!

Market Research

Does anyone know which "think-tank" is busy with the earth-shattering market research that will forever change the SA Telecoms landscape

Surely this should be the question uppermost in the mind of "Staff-Writer" and all the other Telco journalists.

I wonder .......

Do you think that they might be calling for consumer ( public ) input ?????

So MUCH potential -- so many amateur cooks poisoning the brew.

the termination of the Vodafone shareholders agreement provides it with the opportunity to enter the mobile market.

Don't they need a license for this?

"Telkom", as a word, is a like "apartheid" - it has done unspeakable wrongs to South Africa and should be avoided and looked upon in shame and disgust. Forever.

So you're paying TELSCUM for two services.... ?

I can say that as a VOIP operator it's far easier to deal with and get good deals and effective interconnect with Telkom, than it is with Vodacom or even MTN. I agree with their comments and personally look forward to seeing more about Telkoms mobile offering.

quiet telkom, your service is nothing worth mentioning either. proudly telkom free

I currently have ADSL, Telkom 3G, Vodacom 3G and a Cell C contract.

Telkom 3G comes out tops in all departments. I cannot wait for them to either sign roaming agreements with the other operators or to buy out a smaller operator in order to obtain a roaming agreement. Then I'll cancel everything but the Telkom 3G.
