I have been looking at telkom's Smart home deals.

And they are way to cheap for what they are selling. its cant simply be that cheap for so much?

where is the catch?

http://www.telkom.co.za/summerofwow/home.html

have a look at the home supreme and home premium.

I mean you cant even get a 40meg vdsl line for that price?

I cant find any small print on their packages,

What exactly does unlimited Night surfer mean? Am I able to download an unlimited amount between 12-6 ? is it only browsing data and not torrents?

Has any one here any any experience with the Telkom Smart packages or perhaps know anything about them?

There is no catch.

Night-Surfer is ANY data between 00:00 - 07:00 [not 6am anymore] :). You are only limited by what speed your line is. Many of us are scheduling our linux isos for those times and it does not count towards your data limit.

Technically Vox is the cheapest on the VDSL rental but when you factor all these extras, Telkom beats everyone :D. Vox @ R427.50 p/m excludes analogue rental.

Edit: As far as experience, we just signed up for the SmartHome Premium bundle so waiting to sort out the kinks. If it is anything like the current 50GB capped account we use on Ti then performance lately has been abit iffy however they are aware and sorting all this out, it works really great though :).

And regarding the sin cards that come with it.

I mean there's no much use of a sim with only calls, is there a way to say put the 1Gb data and the 100 minute calls onto one sim card?

yes the 24 month contract is a catch if it doesn't work. but if it works like it should its a bargain?

Two of my family member are already on 8ta for thier phones. So mobile service should remain they same. (they seem to be happy with it).

Im currently paying ~R450.00 just for a 50Gb 2meg adsl line. if i add the two phone contracts its already cheaper.

I am just skeptical to sign up with Telkom as they have lost my trust over the past few years.

@Zapo - No way to combine however you get a 3G modem that will have the data sims in as you need and it works on a battery upto 4+- hours using a Micro USB connection [can be setup for the car which just needs a cigarette charger etc]. Voice in the phone and Wifi > modem when needed along with other devices. Not too shabby.

@nadimm - yes , all inclusive and NO HIDDEN FEES. What you see is what you pay.

Do these prices include line rental

Ridiculous pricing so tempting as I could save R700 a month

You know i was ready to go to Vox due to rental pricing for upto 20Mbps but due to the changes and now i am unable to change snr and get around 16Mbps when conditions allow, i decided we should stick with Telkom and this deal came about [okay, the BlackFriday one which is this R899 + an Xbox One] and it is nearing the final stages of being sorted. Overall the value is extremely good. We don't have an issue with two years being on contract as our area aint getting anything faster so it fits perfectly :).

Honestly if you have had less headaches than most, it is worth it simply because of the value added included. This maybe a taste of things to come from Telkom :).

What are the changed with vox?

It does include line rental. In fact it is better than the standard line rental as you will be getting the unlimited anytime call plan on the land line including unlimited anytime land line calls with per second billing for mobile calls. The plan costs R350 a month on it's own but free if you take the smart home deal.

Pretty cool stuff included in those contracts actually.

Had my reply typed but forgot to hit post.

Basically they made changes that now keeps your SNR at 6dB and you cannot modify it on your side to get a little more speed if on an unlocked profile. Cavedog can expand on this or another member :p.

Yes 24 months contract is a fairly long time, however if it works correctly I dont see any issues.

however for me I find the sims fairly disjoint in the whole bundle, I would personally prefer to add a data bundle to an already existing 8ta phone.

Im very tempted to go for the solution.
Does anyone know if you are allowed to UPGRADE during the 24 month contract?

With the sim data?

Is that any time any network data?

Sofar using my softcap 50gb bundle for a week and already on 70gbs usage

I took the 10 gig 2meg line in October, the sim card for voice comes with a 150megs of data so roughly equivalent of the R50 contract from TM and the data sim though with 250 meg is paltry but nice to have if I am on the road and need to check mail etc. It includes line rental, you get the router and a 3g modem.

Yes as far as I know the sim data is "all networks" data which means both Telkom Mobile network 2G,3G and LTE and MTN 2G and 3G coverage which is nice.

Upgrading before the 24 month contract I think would be possible if you upgrade to a higher package. It should say exactly what in the T & C's of the product.

I am actually also looking at this...the Smarthome premium actually. Currently I have a 4Mb uncapped package with Telkom, and if I add line rental I currently pay +- R750 pm.
I got a call from Telkom yesterday informing me my area has been upgraded to 10Mb so I can upgrade. The guy mentioned the Smarthome Premium deal at R899
It comes with 50GB anytime data and unlimited night surfer data. It also comes with 4 sims, 2 x 1GB all network data and 2 x 100 mobile minutes.
In addition it comes with Microsoft 365, a D-Link ADSL wifi router, a wifi range extender and a Huawei 3G Mifi router. The website also lists a free DSTV Explora.
This deal is very tempting because I can use the 1 data sim in my ipad vs. the R145 I pay to Afrihost every month.
The 2nd 1GB I can put into the 3G router and my kids can connect to it when they're at home (not with me).
The 1 x mobile sim (100 mins) I can put into my S4 when I upgrade in March and my ex can use it, vs. the separate MTN contract I have (+- R100 pm).
What I can't use ....or not sure about...
I don't use my landline at all, so the unlimited Telkom to Telkom voice calls is not a benefit to me.
I don't use office applications on my home PC, so I'm not too bothered with the Office 365.
I recently bought a TP-Link TD-W8980 4-Port N600 Dualband Wireless Gbit ADSL2+ Router, so I have no need for the free D-Link one.
I don't have DSTV at home, but I have the compact subscription for the kids, so no need for the Explora.
The 2nd mobile sim will most likely not be used. My kids don't call...ever...and they only IM if they need to get in touch.

The pros definitely outweigh the not so pros so I'll be signing up very soon :D
