Hi,

I need advice regarding Telkom speeds.

About eight month ago we upgraded our DSL384 to the DSL4096 however it was only upgraded to DSL512. After a month they 'fixed' the problem. After numerous phone calls and two technicians they are adamant that the problem is our mac/pc's!!

Last night they upgraged us to the 10Mbps.

However, I'm still downloading a file at +- 50Kbps. Apple downloads at 200Kbps but Sony playstion games download at 60Kbps.

How can I get such varying speeds and how can I fix it? When donloading on my 3G or other wifi networks the speeds are correct. so it clearly must lie with Telkom or my modem (did try a different modem - same problem)? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Call Telkom back.
Ask them what's the full line speed on your connection (if you have 4Mb service and you are quite a distance from the exchange then you would see varying speeds or won't sync fully at 4Mb).
To confirm check your attenuation and SNR to confirm if you can sync higher than 512Kbps. But if your router is showing 4Mb/10Mbps then you shouldn't have a problem.
If your router is showing 4Mb/10Mb tell Telkom that they must "reset your ports" from their side. This should solve the problem since the ports need to be reset to cater for the jump in higher line speed.

Run the test at speedtest.net (check that it will test to a site local to your area) and see what they show as your 'upload, download' and ping readings.
You can also test real download speeds by downloading from your Internet provider network e.g. if you use SAIX, download something from ftp://ftp.saix.net/pub and time it. If you are on the IS network then try something from ftp://ftp.is.co.za/pub. The other networks should have something similar I think.

We are on 10Mbps and are with in 2km from the exhange. speedtest gives a reading of 67ms (ping) 3.8Mbps (download) and 0.06Mbps (Upload). I download firefox now at 57Kbps?? Firefox should be much faster than than on a 10Mbps (as per telkom). Very confused.

Just because you're on the highway doesn't mean you'll be doing 120km/h!

Here is SA, a there is a big difference between line speed and actual speed because of the service provider option and varying levels of service.
Which ISP are you using? Telkom, Webafrica, Mweb etc?
What Package did you buy? cheap as chips or Platinum unshaped?
All these make a difference to your connection speed and quality of service.
Like Psyndrome said, check your modem to confirm SNR and sync level.
