Telkom Sunninghill exchange upgrade?

Does anyone know when the sunninghill exchange will be upgraded to 10 meg? Let alone 20?

There's a newly built Msan about a km away from my house... I want 10!

i had a technician round who said i should phone 10210 to upgrade to 10mb.

when i phoned, they said the max exchange speed was 4mb. so i presume there must be something around the corner.

Sunninghill Exchange upgrade barely made a difference

The Sunninghill exchange currently syncs at 6mbs. It is very sad. I have three kids and they all want to stream HD video together in their rooms while the wife skypes and I vpn into my office and my 6 HD closed circuit cameras stream content to the internet. Each user requires 8 to 15 mbs for HDTV quality (with bit-rate reduction from MPEG-4 AVC compression). So in total my house requires a minimum of 100mbps.

We are so far behind.

FACT: Household Bandwith requirements have been doubling every two years. So if the average household is getting by with a mere 10mbps now, they will need 20 in 2015 and 40 in 2017. By when will Telkom have rolled out 40mbps adsl?

Telkom should be installing infrastructure now that supports a minimum of 200mbps to the kerb. By the time Telkom has rolled out their new 20 - 40mbps network, it will be outdated. In 2020, we will be wanting to stream holographic displays which will require an estimated 100'000mbps bandwidth).

We are fast approaching the technological singularity and if we do not have a first world infrastructure in place before that event happens, we will be left behind faster than we can blink.

Let's face it, South Africa will always be years behind and we may as well just give up and go live in caves.

VDSL should soon be capable of supplying 200Mbps download speeds to customers within 400m of the MSAN using vectoring and pair bonding. Some operators are currently upgrading their infrastructure to provide these speeds. There are also other technologies in development that might allow even faster speeds using the current copper infrastructure. These technologies are expensive to deploy and require regular and ongoing upgrades and maintenance so we are always going to be years behind the rest of the world. There are no other competitive cable or fibre based services in SA so Telkom can delay the implementation of any new technologies for many years.

It is likely they will cut you over soon. they usually take a bit of time to do so - there are probably loads of lines that need to be done.

However, if you see a techie talk to them - you might be able to speed it up.
