Telkom Task Force

Somebody at Telkom phoned me and apparently the big problem they have with me is reselling ADSL bandwidth which is supposed to be a end-user product. Also reselling without a VAN's license is the other issue. The big joke was that the isp that reported me was selling me the bandwidth! They also got a warning.

I then asked, that if I become a reseller and get a VAN's license am I then allowed to resell bandwidth via Wireless? He then said that Telkom will immediately cut my lines because it is illegal! He also told me if I want to do that I must get a license like Iburst and Sentech!

Does anybody know where we can find out if there is anything like a license to be a wireless isp? And how to get it?

There's no such thing as getting a license to becoming a Wireless ISP. You have to apply

1. for a VAN's license from ICASA.
2. For frequency/spectrum for your equipment/application, also from ICASA.

Neither of these two items are inexpensive, or doable by a small business. This is why we should keep on lobbying gubment, and ICASA to free the 2.4Ghz frequency and reduce the barriers to entry. At least then, one might only have to contend with a VANS license.

My advise: Buy your bandwidth through some other means, etc, find ways to continue... At least until the Communications Department can get it through their skulls that competition is good for prices.

Telkom can get ****ed if they think they can tell ppl they cannot put up wisp's, and try and pressure icasa to take them down.

amen

It's despicable.

IMHO somebody should just do us all a favour and snipe the great Comms Minister. Or leave her and Sizwe in Soweto with thousands of hellkom flyers laying about, let the people getting the worst end of the stick do the messy work

*sigh* we can dream, can't we?

Getting bandwidth from other countries

Hi, is it not possible to get a private vsat connection directly from the states. We live in a free country and should be able to make decisions like this so we dont ahve to route threw telkom.

Your Thoughts....

My thoughts.

1)
If you live in South Africa, your telecommunications choices are not free. You will use Telkom, SNO, MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, Sentech or WBS. Those are your choices (legally anyway).

2)
Sat = high throughput (downlink, uplink is slower)
Sat = high latency (so no gaming)

Guys if Aerosat can do it, any one can.

Aerosat has been bullied by Icasa, but they refuse to give up.
This Telkom Task Team will have to carry on where Icasa failed.
Icasa even came to one of my businesses and confiscated
my equipment. I was really pissed of about this, but Aerosat
came round the following morning and replaced all the equipment
free of charge. I took a chance with Aerosat and stayed with them
because I had very few problems before that. They assured me that
as I client I need not be worried about legal action, because Icasa
would come after them first.

The main reason I support Aerosat so much is that I used to buy
my Bandwidth through Telkom. THEY RIPPED ME OFF. I even tried
an ADSL line from them and hit my cap in no time. Aerosat is the
reason I have managed to keep my businesses open.

We need more people like this to fight for what is right.

Go, Aerosat, Go !!!

TELKOM ABUSING ITS POSITION TO UNDERMINE OPERATORS

See Bernard du Plessis' comments below regarding Telkom's abuse of their protected position.

Bernard is a retired advocate ready to tackle Telkom on behalf of a working group of smaller VANS and ISP's if necessary.

Subject: RE: TELKOM UNDERMINING SMALL OPERATORS

A month or two ago I has similar access problems with Mweb. They were also being targeted with a breakdown in connectivity
I still maintain that TELKOM is CONTRACTUALLY bound to furnish you with the service for which you are paying and that it is necessary that you put them on terms to deliver what you pay for and in so doing hold them responsible for any and all loses you may suffer as a result of their actions.
If you can prove that they have indeed activated a task force to squeeze wireless operators I would make an application to the Supreme Court applying for an order declaring their activity illegal and further asking the court to order them to cease that activity which proves that they are trying to impose a monopoly on the country and to remove opposition
They are just beyond the pale and need to be pulled up in a big way. Get supporters and we go to Court !! This detribalized Dutchman is not afraid of any of them from the Top to the bottom included.
I have taken on big boys before and won!!

Incase you haven't noticed.. the monopoly (legally wise).
Its just the competition dragging their feet now.

Why a task force closing down "illegal" competition?

Why not a task force to up service levels at affordable rates to destroy the need for "illegal" operators?

If Telkom spent the money they spend on this task force to ensure decent service, ads like the one in Beeld would not be required.

Everyone must do it.
Make it unmanageable. ICASA takes years to do anything anyway.
Look at the MyADSL ADSL Complaint.
This is the third year now. Actually we are entering the fourth year of waiting.

ICASA won't be able to control it and what the hell for anyway?

In the not too distant future was are going to look back and laugh at the draconian laws we are subjected to for a simple internet connection.

One would swear the internet is new technology the way Telkom carries on.

Show them a fat toffee. Like Mad said.
Until they issue you with a Court Order it is mere threats.
By the time the matter comes to ICASA it will be stale.

ECA being passed change this?
too early to tell

as far as i can see icasa is co-operating with wisps at the moment and helping them to sort out interference issues

I am no legal eagle, but i seem to recall some regulation/clause under the old telecommunications act which allows one to establish your own infrastructure if the following is done.

An Application for Service is submitted to Telkom.

Telkom decline to service you in a set amount of time due to their inability to provide the infrastructure - No lines/bandwidth available.

I have heard of municiplaities using this "loophole" in the past.

Example

You apply for a 1MB Diginet line from your Corner Store in the *SS end of KZN to your other cornerstore in the *SS end of EasternCape. The Second Cornerstore may happen to have an ADSl line going out

Telkom says no can do.

You then put in your own Infrastructure.

Please note that this is not a joke.
