Telkom testing local loop unbundling in exchanges

4 years after the original deadline. Forgive my lack of excitement that anything will happen soon.

If Telkom is already planning to roll out fibre wouldn’t it result in local loop unbundling? Can’t they rather focus on replacing the copper infrastructure with fibre?

No. It will be a good couple of years before all copper can be replaced and in some cases it will never be replaced with fibre.

It's vital that LLU goes ahead as it should impact on future fibre connections as well. If it leads to facilities leasing, even better.

I live in one of the test exchange areas, and it is a nightmare at the moment -----

Telephone services are extremely erratic, lots of faults, lost service, no dial tone no power etc.
Adsl up and down, slow intermittent and noisy ....

Hope they get their tests over quickly !!!!

“In the past we would fiercely oppose LLU,” said Maseko, speaking at Satnac 2015, but Telkom has changed its perspective on wholesale open-access networks.

So what changed this mindset at Telkom and what's the catch?

I wonder which exchanges they targeted...

New Leadership

Change in business model.. thats more of the dictator. You remember the staff cuts.. you don't think they did this without considering where the move this cost to ;) Basically they doing what they should have done a decade ago, i.e. move towards being a telecoms management & product company, rather than doing the old school low end work as well in a large manner as this costs in terms of staffing which is costly. By moving towards this LLU becomes easier as the cost becomes very apparent and already outsourced in a sense so passing this cost on is easier than if they did it in house.

Wonder what's going to happen to the ADSL pricing when this happens - would they just move the telephony rental over and add it to the ADSL rental? I doubt they'd be willing to lose out on a lot of revenue...

Early adopter problems!

Maybe LLU is now a euphemism for cable theft ...

Subscriber: Hey, my lines not working ...

10210: Ah, according to our records your line has been unbundled and no other company is prepared to take it on.

:D

PS. don't they already do this and give either fibre or LTE as alternatives?

Other operators entering? In time Telkom will gain more from LLU that it loses. So expect them to be pushing for it at the next hearings. Hypocrisy rules.

Did you receive some form of notification from Telkom about this?
