Telkom the racist?
Posted Wed, 05 Aug 2009

Telkom workers, who have threatened to strike, are not scheduled to meet management again until next week, the Communication Workers' Union said on Tuesday.

The union and management would meet on August 11 at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), said CWU spokesman Pheane Ramoadi.

On Monday, Ramoadi said negotiations had broken down when Telkom representatives had made a proposal that was less than a previous offer. He said this reduced offer was made after the Telkom board intervened.

"The company requested to go back on their principles, We will meet next week Tuesday (11 August) while they request more money from their board," said Ramoadi.

The workers had initially demanded a 13 percent increase but had settled for 7.5 percent if Telkom would alter salary scales which Ramoadi said were racialised.

"They said they were prepared to move people up from the lower level but now it seems like they have reversed," said Ramoadi.

"The company is enforcing a drastic racism in their employment levels," he said.

He said white employees dominated higher salary scales while employees on lower scales were black. Ramoadi also accused Telkom of paying its white employees bonuses that were R10 000 higher than those given to black colleagues.

Telkom did not immediately respond to Sapa's questions about the dispute.

The CWU would march from Pretoria City Hall to Telkom Tower on Tuesday to hand over a memorandum of demands to management.

The union said it would embark on strike action on Thursday.

If this is the case that whites are getting higher bonuses based on skin colour then the strike action is justified. However we must here both sides of the story before jumping too any conclusions.

depends if the positions are the same and performances etc

Your salary scale is directly porportional to your job grade which is determined by skill. More skilled people get payed more, simple as that. Are there more white skilled people in the company as opposed to black people? Yes.
You cannot pay a techie the same salary as a specialist. People irrespective of colour get paid the same money if their grade is the same within the salary band for that grade.

Bonuses is related to your salary/grade, nothing new there. Management (& specialist on the same level) get bonuses related to being on 'managenment level' and this is also irrespective of colour. A black manager gets the same as a indian, coloured or white manager. Management staff level people get much bigger bonuses (% wise) than non management level staff which might be what their gripe is about.

perfect logical sense...

but your answer leaves them unable to play the race card :( so it will not do I am afraid

Its always the same, they want work, then they get hired end up not doing the job, and just sitting and taking the salary at the end of the month. And then they wonder why things are not looking to good after some time.

Do the job properly and black people will be able to get payed just as much as white people. Blacks dont understand they work for that money and some are not doing a good job and thats why they dont get much money or a promotion. Its a logical thing if you not getting this that the work u are doing is shoddy.

In my company we have people who sit at their desks and do nothing extraordinary though they bitch and moan with the unions if they don't get promoted. I am better qualified, I work harder, I do the impossible tasks nobody else can do - if I get promoted or get paid a better bonus its because I deserve it. Everyone has the same opportunities now except for whites - depends on what you do with what you are given, even with my severe lack of pigment I still get promoted over others.

Telkom are racist. The general idea in SA is to make the haves pay more to benefit the have nots (and the politicians). Telkom is doing that to some extent but they're not building enough lines into the townships. They are racist in that regard.

If you are getting promoted, why are you complaining?
