Yeah but what happens if you dont want to make phone calls on their copper? You should have the choice not to have to pay for something youre not interested in using .

Line rental has nothing to do with what you use it for! This is a service not a cologne. We're paying for what we get, not for perceived value.

Here's my proposal for all the Telkom reps reading this. I promise, it's the most logical and easiest to implement solution you've ever come across. Even my gran could do it.

The "line" is just the local loop, which we pay for already if we have a phone. ADSL requires no change to the line, so there is simply no justification for another fee. I mean really, this is the only way that makes any sense at all.

Then there's just the DSLAM port and backbone. The ISP should rent the ports it needs. The ISP should also rent bandwidth on the backbone. These incurred costs form part of the monthly ISP fee that customers like us pay. Completely fair.

But Telkom's got themselves into a hole by making the line rental higher than the ISP fee (haven't you!)... dropping the line rental would be a significant loss. But you have to drop it. Or you won't be getting anything from Santa this Xmas.

I don't use my line to make phone calls, yet I'm paying for it. I don't even have a phone in my house. BTW... charging me ten times the amount of what it should be, is a little bit irritating, like your post.
