Telkom transfer and Power over Ethernet

Pardon my ignorance.


I asked a while back to get Telkom to cancel my line and DSL at my previous residence and move it over to the new residence.

This was 3 weeks ago, so far no SMS / no date.

Anyhow, I've been looking at the layout of the house which I share with the owner and they do have an existing telephone line and jack in the kitchen (the cables were pulled out by the previous owners.).

The problem is my room is across from the open plan kitchen and quite a distance away to extend to IF they follow the skirting. Another possibility is to run it into the roof and over to where the TV cable comes out of the ceiling and from there to follow the skirting to my desk. A bit of work though. But I've been told that Telkom wont go the "roof route".

So someone mentioned that Telkom can apparently install the line / a box that attaches to your power and then put another little box in my room, also attached through the power. Called it Power over Ethernet. I remember hearing similar rumours years ago that Eskom was going to do this / power utility companies would start doing this.

Is this for real and do I need to request a "PoE" device, if it can be called that?

No,you're looking for HomePlug/Powerline tech. It's more "Ethernet over power" than "Power over ethernet" (which is used to power devices over network cables)

I use HomePlug devices all through my house,very useful if you can't run cable

Telkom will put a cable through the roof, but you will physically have to do it yourself. Once it comes out the roof they will glue it to the walls and connect their jacks, but they won't go in the roof.

I think you're referring to powerline adaptors but I've never heard of Telkom supplying or installing them.

Interesting. Really, speed isn't too bad I guess.

Do you guys think a normal network cable, say of around 15 meters would have less latency than extending a telephone line to a router, also a 15m cable?

In other words, would it be better to rather put the router in the kitchen and use a longer network cable or run the t-phone cable all the way to my room?

Both solutions are practical but I'd be inclined to put the router in the bedroom out of harms way and where you can see it. I'm pretty sure one of my clients has a 25m Ellies telco extension cable between the jack & modem on their 10mbps line and it doesn't give problems.

Powerline Ethernet is susceptible to issues where other electronics create interference on the powerline.

Funnily enough my PC power supply caused the issue for me, so when my pc was plugged in network didn't work - What a lol.

Both cable extensions will have affect on latency from the distance, signal travels at 2/3's the speed of light.
Only issues that could affect latency of extending cables is if they get any form of interference along their route.

I'd just extend the Jack (telco cable is thinner and easier to conceal against skirting).

I have a 25m extension to create a jack in my room, then a 30m Cat5 cable going from the router over my roof to the other side of the house. you can go all out and get Cat6 (Shielded) but that Cat5 has lasted almost 12 years now.
