Just chatted to the techies there, they have just or are busy installing 4 x separate MSANS.
Says by July, they will be fully operational, they said that I should see upwards of 40mb.

My god these things are full with Fibre optic cabling.
I was told the fibre runs directly from these units to the exchange.

They were laughing at me when I said will it go higher than my current 10mb

They promised me by end of July, 40 mb at least
 
From those MSANs you can get either copper or optic fibre services to the customer. Initially Telkom will use the existing copper but they are piloting FTTH in a few areas.
 
So you are one of the lucky few :D
Did you ask them how much for the 40 meg and for how long the field trial will be ??

What I do not understand is how they are putting 4 x MSANS in my road????
Wtf? Are we the most data hungry road in South Africa? I mean I know I download a lot but really :D

The objective is to shorten the copper lengths to the customer. That coupled with the concentration of customers will determine the proximity of the MSANs from each other.
 
I wonder if telkom will canvass the people in the new field trial areas to get maximum load for stress testing on the systems ??
 
Yes I'm also in fourways, trenches are being dug up everywhere , Lonehill is almost done ! Just have to connect one more road cabinet and then install the fibre cabinets

Sadly i don't think we will hear from you come July :D as you will probably be under an NDA :p.

I thought trials are FREE??

Lastly, what HDD would one need to help sustain if we get peak speeds of say 3MB/s or more, i know my SSD handles 1MB/s super but more speed means more write access so those 5400RPMs going to suffer or are those only when on 100MB fibre (i remember an old windows box was suffering at 7MB/s in ol' Germany).
 
Wonder how they transfer our lines from the normal cabinets to the new ones?? Do you think the internet would be down for a while?

Would we see major improvements in stats? My line is horrible :'( but we are part of this upgrade sooo.....?

Um my SSD easily does 200MB/s+ and my normal drives do 80MB/s+ and the lines only run at 40Mbps which is only 5MB/s
