Why?

Nothing wrong with a stable (!) wifi link inside a home. Adds like 1ms extra latency & at n standard it won't be an issue with b/w.

Streams have much lower bitrates than d/ls, so a case can def be made for d/ls. Sure with a 40mbps line you can theoretically stream at high bitrate...but you'd first need to find such a stream. e.g. Youtube 1080p streams at ~4mbps. A 1080p linux distro off usenet is 20mbps+.

Clearly you missed the part where people do speedtests on 40mbit vdsl lines, and only get 12Mbps, and then go wtf. Then once you suggest to them to use a physical cable their speedtest goes up to 40mbit/sec.

Wireless is not bad for mobile devices, and it has it's place in each home, but if you have a 40Mbps line, and you actually want the speed, then wireless with half duplex connectivity and multiple devices sharing the same wireless frequency just won't cut it.
Wires still have their place, because no wireless device in any home will actually max out 40Mbps adsl lines, even though I know you get APs rated at 150 to 300Mbps, it just isn't the case in the real world.
 
Looks like these trials will end 31st of Jan. Officially Telkom will start selling 20/40Mbps VSDL to resellers as of the 4th of March.

Not sure what the Telkom Direct prices will be, but doesn't look like it will be too expensive for users.

And where do you get that type of info ?

In the basically unimaginable scenario that this actually happens, it will probably have the same kind of availability as the mythical 10mbps ADSL, in 5% of all telkom exchanges of which half can only deliver speeds of around 6mbps.

I like disbelievers :)

Well, I think in most cases the people that will be on MSANs, will probably get much better quality, because the MSANs will be much closer to them than most DSLAMs are currently.

10Mbps is hardly mythical, I have 10Mbps at home myself. Also had it at the previous place I was renting.
 
Those are great speeds, hopefully since they are upgrading the network the entry level ADSL connection speed should be no less than 2Mbps.

Doubt it.

It looks like they adding 2 more products to their current offerings, so complete list looks like:
1. Up to 1Mbps ADSL
2. Up to 2Mbps ADSL
3. Up to 10Mbps ADSL
4. Up to 20Mbps VDSL *
5. Up to 40Mbps VDSL *

* Initially the line will be set to ADSL, once confirmed by the ISP that user has VSDL modem compatible with ADSL, Telkom will set port to VDSL mode.

How extensive would the MSAN rollout have been by 4th March?

Not much more than the trial areas, if at all.

As for new roll-outs post trial, no idea, Telkom only said, where it is financially feasible to them to roll out MSANs and upgrade the network, or something along those lines, can't remember the exact words.

Site surveys done in George, Southern Cape and we will be getting 5 MSAN in 2014 only
Outeniqua Rugby Stadium
Church Street, Denneoord (near Church)

Sweet news updates, thanks guys :D. Tinuva, MickeyD and the trial users.

I would very much like Telkom to put up a link on their site where users can post their interest from their City/Town/Suburb and have a guaranteed min needed for an area to have. For Google Fiber they only needed 10 applicants to guarantee their town for fiber access and i think if this (VDSL) had to kick off like that then we will see many users showing interest. I liked that they had the surrounding businesses get access for free so users subsidized them partly (atleast i think it works like that). I can't see that happening straight away for VDSL so am thankful for that :).

Looks like i may get this in 2014 then :whistle: eh
