Is anybody else on Telkom Mobile having trouble getting VoLTE to work?

All the relevant settings are enabled on my phone but as soon as I make a call, the network drops to 3G and call quality is like going back in time to 2010.

The call centre was not much help and could only open a query which will take up to 72 hours to escalate and possibly weeks to resolve, according to the agent…

Also, does Telkom have support for support WiFi Calling? The setting for it is not even present in my phone settings since switching to Telkom.

VoLTE and VoWiFi (WiFi calling) is and has been working fine on my side.

From what you have mentioned it seems like your sim has not been provisioned for the VoLTE and VoWiFi services.

What phone do you have? Has VoLTE worked before for you?

I have my phones band selector locked to LTE only and don't have problems with calls on Telkom and both of the roaming networks.

I suspect it’s really as simple as just provisioning my SIM for it which should normally happen automatically. Why the call centre agent doesn’t know anything about that and has to escalate it to another department is beyond me.

I have an iPhone 12. VoLTE and WiFi Calling used to work very well with my Vodacom SIM.

Telkom VoLTE randomly started working for me around 2021, haven't gotten VoWifi to work but have seen it on a relatives phone.

With vodacom I called in to customer care and they had VoLTE/Wifi provisioned immediately then called back to confirm it was working.

VoWifi is not available on iOS

VoWifi is not available on iOS
It most certainly is available. I used it frequently with my Vodacom SIM and the same iPhone.

Not sure where you get that idea… But then again, you frequently post comments without giving a source for your information…

I believe @3Gee means that VoLTE on IOS devices may not be supported by Telkom, Unfortunately the link to the Telkom VoLTE page is broken so I can not confirm what devices are supported. Maybe some other iphone users will be able to give more insight.

No 3Gee is just one of those posters who has nothing useful to contribute but posts unhelpful speculation as if it’s fact without providing source. I’ve seen his posts elsewhere before. Least they could do is link to a source.

Can’t find an up to date list anywhere of supported VoLTE devices from Telkom. According to Apple’s own carrier support site, Telkom does in fact support VoLTE for iPhones.

Just trying to find out if anyone has had success with it.

Interesting response. I would strongly suggest you take the time and read my response , i referred to VoWifi on Telkom Mobile and iOS , not VoltE
Volte works on Telkom Mobile without any hiccups.

I have the same problem on my Galaxy S23 and my previous S20 FE. VoLTE not working on Telkom sim. I have a secondary MTN sim card in the phone and both VoLTE, VoWifi and 5G work perfectly on that sim.

I went to Telkom and they said my Sim card was too old to support VoLTE which is fair enough as it was indeed quite old and I needed a new SIM.

Swapped over to new SIM but still no VoWifi or VoLTE.

So yeah not really sure. Did anyone solve this mystery?

According to Telkom mobile FAQ no separate provisioning should be necessary for VoLTE. If your device and SIM support it should just work automatically.

The other potential story I was given was that not all Telkom numbers had been enabled to be allowed to use VoLTE

So for example a number starting with 078 might be allowed to but 076 might be blocked. Possibly to reduce the number of devices using VoLTE and limit network congestion on the LTE network which I guess could make sense but if true it just becomes luck of the draw if you get it or not.

Reason I say this could be true as I have a friend also with an S23 who's VoLTE is working on his Telkom SIM no issues.

It has to be manually provisioned on the sim, you will maybe have to ask the call centre 5-8 times to do this as they are a clueless bunch that don't know their product. Ask for them to provision volte and vowifi on the sim and don't accept any excuse. If you don't come right try them on Twitter or FB messenger, seems the smarter ones work on those platforms

Thanks @Tector will give it a go via social media channels.

Pretty strange that it needs to be manually provisioned for some numbers and not others but ya is what it is I guess. Like you said they don't understand their own offerings.

I've had to auto provisioning fail on every single network at least once. Sometimes I get lucky and it just starts working after a day or two but most of the time I have to nag 'em. I hope you get it sorted, you really need to have lots of patience for this

@Tector thanks for the advice. I came right on TelkomSA twitter support explained the issue had to really spell it out for them with a ton of screenshots and explanations, but they logged a technical ticket yesterday afternoon and this morning both VoLTE and VoWifi is now provisioned correctly and working on my Telkom SIM.

Much appreciated.

For anyone experiencing this issue due to automatic VoLTE/VoWifi provisioning failing on your SIM card basically this advice is sound @TelkomSA on Twitter can assist but you have to be very firm and clear with them that VoLTE is activated on your device (if you have a Samsung device you can check it in settings or install the Samsung Band Selector App from the Play Store if using Android to view hidden network settings and show that VoLTE is activated on the device if you can't see VoLTE in the normal settings)

Once you've provided screenshots making it very clear that VoLTE is activated correctly on your device as per @Tector you will then explain to them that this is not a device issue as they will be very convinced the problem is on your end.

You will then re-iterate that the auto provisioning has failed on Telkom's side when trying to provision this SIM card for VoLTE/VoWifi.

Eventually after many screenshots and explanations they will cave, and they will log a technical support ticket after which in hopefully 1-3 working days a technical person in the backend will sort you out as they appear to know what to do to get this working quite quickly.

But yes, as per @Tector you do definitely need patience if you are in this situation but agreed you will probs have more success on Twitter or Facebook mainly because you can provide screenshots showing them the problem isn't on your end.

Appreciate the help :)

I am glad you are sorted

Glad to hear you've got it to work.

I am sitting with VoLTE now working on my phone (although call quality doesn't sound like it...), but WiFi calling won't work.

The Telkom support guys are adamant that WiFi calling has been provisioned for my SIM but the setting to enable it is not even present in my phone settings which makes me think otherwise. I used to have WiFi calling on the same phone back when I had a Vodacom SIM. Don't understand why Telkom can't get it to work.

Thanks to the contributors of this thread. I contacted Telkom on Twitter yesteday morning and when they started pretending the problem is on my side I sent them a link to this thread. A day later I have VoLTE/VoWIFI activated on my Telkom number.

What phone? Possibly vodacom software or unsupported handset on Telkom. If VoLTE works then VoWiFi would be provisioned on sim as well
