I refer to this thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/605480-Sudden-unexplained-drop-in-line-stats as the same happened to me on 22/3.

My line has always been on the faster option (1024 kbps) and after Telkom increased the speeds, I got 2048 kbps for about 3 months before I suddenly went down to 1024 again after the same episode as this weekend - disconnects, noisy line, dead phone. I was told I'm too far from the exchange and could NOT get more than 1024 kbps. About 4 months ago I had another episode of disconnects, noisy line, dead phone and after it was fixed the speed suddenly increased to 2048 kbps again and I thought something must have been fixed. I also swopped my router/modem and it showed attainable speed as close to 3000 kbps.

So on Saturday the line started disconnecting and speed dropped, so I reset/rebooted the router and the speed returned to normal. Not for long though and then the line became very noisy at times, so I decided to log a fault for the noisy line. While logging the fault I decided to check the noise again and found the phone went completely dead. I carried on reporting the fault as 'no service' instead of noisy line and struggled through the weekend on about 1000 kbps down and about 250 kbps up.

So this morning the Telkom tech arrived and called on the phone, so I gathered that the line was working. He checked and I assumed it was all ok now. I told him about what happened on Saturday and he then stated that my line is back on 1024 and that I cannot get higher speed because I am more than 5km from the exchange. I asked how come I had 2048 for several months then and he said they are upgrading to bring the exchange closer so then I could get 10 Mbps. Still unsure what this has to do with my drop in speed, I asked why this will affect the current line. He replied that they installed new equipment to allow for the upgrade and that the new equipment does not allow a speed higher than 1024 over 5km or more.

When I told him what happened since Telkom increased the speed of fast and faster options and that I had 2048 kbps for long periods without a problem, and will be going to the Fast option, he said that the increase in speed was just a test to see if the upgrade that they are now doing, would work. Also that there are no more fast option and that all the old 256 and 1024 lines are now on 1024 kbps again.:wtf:

Now my phone is owrking, but I still have a noisy line and speed of 1135 kbps. Looks like the only option for me then is to go to mobile.

Normally a blown POTS filter will lower the sync rate a bit and create noise on the line.

Check it out

Sounds like that tech is a comedian and a bull shyter .
Noise on the line is definitely an indication there is a fault and it will come back if the tech did not fix it this time.
Just report your line noisy again.
If the same tech comes back show him this thread.

I tested with 3 filters and noise does not change. Also tested with just the ADSL line connected and the speed does not change.

Cannot report the noise as the no service fault is still active. Sent a pm to TelkomZA and hope my line returns to normal soon.

:D and now my (noisy) phone service is dead again. Still slow ADSL

Attenuation now at 71 down 44 up and speed 1047 down 264 up.
just to add - SNR 6.2 down 4.8 up. Attenuation down used to be as low as 56 dB.

Damn. I thought I was far from my exchange with att of 41.

Your line stats are really crap.

Yes since Saturday. Telkom messing around again like they do with my line every 3 to 4 months. Very 'clever' tech I had round this time and now it looks like my line is not fixed on purpose because I told him I don't believe Telkom any longer and going to change to mobile ... not Telkom mobile though.:D

I tested with Zertop diagnostic and results are:

I notice that where I usually get maybe 80% of line speed, its now just over 91% on international and my attainable rate is 1612 Kbps.
