Hi Everyone.

We are going to change over from Fixed Line Telkom to their wireless phones. We don't want to have a contract with Telkom, so we would have to buy a phone from them for R2000.00 each. Is it not possible to buy a different phone (a better quality) from somehwere else? If so, what type of phone must one buy? ANy links to shops etc would be great!

Its just a cellphone so, If you don't want to use their device you can use any cell phone.
The nice thing about their one is looks like a regular phone for old folks there really is no other benefit to it.

@dw1980

Something I want to caution you against. "someone" (can't prove anything) racked up 1000s of randelas worth of data charges by setting that exact phone up as a mobile Hotspot at well aged mother in laws house.. The first month she complained to us that this new phones she was forced to take or have her service cut was not free as advertised. We chalked it up to small print and left none the wiser. The second month she came to us freaking out about the bill after which I saw r1000s in data charges when I investigated. We opened a fraud case, disabled Hotspot and locked the phone with a pin
Apart from locking it, there is literally nothing you can do to disable the functionality on the phone so speak to Telkom about ensuring no data charges can be accrued (good luck with that one)

I got my Telkom phone for free, but it stays Telkom property (if I remember correctly) and must be returned if one cancels their service.

Or just walk around with it in hand.

On a serious note if you want something different and you already have a telkom phone at home, get their router d-link 956m and plug your land-line into that. You can even use cordless phones - even a set of 3 if you have such.

Let me know if you want pics etc

Oh, modem is 1499 BTW and is a fibre router as well. Don't know if the two work concurrently.

Thank you Daruk for those hilarious comments and the visuals they create!

For dw1980, following is some information from two other threads, https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/flla-phones.976885/, and https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/voip.1057869/:

Some alternatives to landline phones:
  1. If you want to keep your Telkom/geographic number: 1) You can get one of the two Telkom FLLA phone services. a) One of Telkom's FLLA phone services is a cellphone that looks like a landline phone (but you can put its sim into any cellphone), b) The other Telkom FLLA phone is a VOIP service (calls over the internet). They plug your analogue/landline phone, or a VOIP fixed or cordless phone that you can buy from Telkom or any other provider, into the back of a router linked to the internet via fibre or cellular LTE. A VOIP service can also be obtained from providers other than Telkom, eg Vox, Mweb, Axxess, Switchtel, Freshphone. The VOIP service can additionally or alternatively be set up on a smartphone.
  2. If you don't want to keep the Telkom number, a VOIP service will provide you with a new 087- number. If you prefer the cell network, Cell C anynet voice plans are reasonable. There are several of these Cell C anynet calling plans, ranging from R7 to R200. I mainly use the one for R200. lasts 30 days, gives 15 hours of calls to any number in South Africa (22c/minute), and toll-free and emergency numbers are free. An alternative is Cell C's prepaid 66c/min calling plan.
  3. For overseas calls, VOIP services are cheap, and also cheap for local or overseas phone calls are apps on a smartphone or computer where both parties have the same app, eg Whatsapp, Skype.
  4. There are several threads on this forum about VOIP and alternatives to Telkom landlines (you can search for them using the search icon at the top of any forum page. The search terms Voip, and Telkom copper, will bring up lots of these threads).

my neighbour took theirs back to Telkom in one of our local malls. Before going to Telkom they popped in to Pick n Pay. The phone rang inside her handbag... So she answered it
On a full size handset at the Oros isle trying to look inconspicuous :ROFL:
same think happened to my Gramps - walking through the mall it rings he had a nice conversation and people stopped to have a double take.

Hi I need some help please. I have an elderly relative who lives 500km away from me who's phone has stopped working. Get a message saying the number is not in service if I try call it. She tells me she got a new phone. I'm trying to figure out the problem. Telkom tells me the line is active and it was migrated to a wireless phone with sim card. What is this? Is she still supposed to get an invoice? Is it a contract?

for her it's exactly the same in terms of billing -tey probably gave her the unit with the sim card in already - just ask her if she has the phone plugged in to power

Thanks so much, apparently it wasn't properly plugged into power according to the matron of the old age home. Thanks, getting somewhere.
