I have just had adsl installed at home - finally.

I was informed by my web hosting service provider that i had to use smtp.saix.co.za for my out going mail server.

Now i know that WBS has this stupid policy - of only using their outgoing server - to try and stop spam... but i didn't realise telskum was doing the same thing.

Did i miss something: has it always been like this - or is this something new???

You can use any SMTP server you have access to.
Normally ADSL users have access to smtp.saix.co.za ;)

Telkom doesn't block traffic to any other SMTP servers, unlike WBS. You can use any other SMTP server you choose.

It's smtp.saix.net. Many of the ISPs that resell SAIX accounts give your their own ISP, but like in the case of Axxess, it's the same server.

You can use any other smtp server, but be aware the whoever runs the server gets to decide if you may use it. You can roll your own smtp server too, but again, if it's on a dynamic IP, may servers won't accept mail from you.

smtp.saix.net is reliable and fairly fast though, you shouldn't have any problem with it unless you try to spam through it - then they'll blacklist you
