Ok, to try to find out little more info about the new capping strategy from TelkomInternet (TI), can you please post in this thread once you are capped on your TI account. Please post the following info:

Used total GB: XX GB (includes both uploads and downloads)
Date/time the cap was imposed: YYYY:MM:DD HH:MM (as precisely as you can)

this will allow us to see if there is a relationship between the time of capping and the usage, as well as to see if there is a relationship between the times the different users are capped.

Thank you very much, and please don't post irrelevant to the above stuff, except maybe some bumps to keep the thread near the top!

I think that one of the problems relating to capping is that telkomsa accounts are only reset every 24hrs. This will cloud measurement.

Based on Telkomsa's statement that the average usage is 1.4GB, they are happy their total purchased bandwith (60,000 users) won't be exceeded in 24hrs.

Whereas the smaller ISP is sailing much closer to the wind in terms of total available vs. total used and so is resetting more often in order to block overusage, because, if the purchased usage is exceeded, the ISP will have to buy more without the additional income, and this could amount to a lot of money.

No luck with this tread? I think people are to scared to post thier totals because then some dimwit will come call them an abuser

he was asking about last month... I suppose not many people got capped last month.

Ja i think its possible that not that many people got capped. I ended the month at about 57 or 58 gig without being capped.

Whoops just remembered that he meant once you are capped this month.

Yes, I am asking about people being capped throughout January 2006! The idea is to analize the collected info at the end of the month and see if we can come to some conclusion or get some insight about the capping strategy.

If you don't want to post how much traffic you did, please post at least the date/time you were capped!

when i talked to telkom 2 months ago they said that it would all stay the same until one resived notification via mail, this is what i am dreeding when i get back. but till then i am doing 30gb+ and no this is NOT a abuse of broadband in the states i did 100gb+

ok,

November 2005 68.6G, did not get capped
December 2005 65.4G, got capped on the 20th.
January 2006 13G so far, not capped yet.

I suspect the trend will be a slow decrease in the amount people can go over the cap and I don't think it will have anything to do with people pushing the limits. My feeling is that this is Telkoms way of slowly turning high usage users into low usage users without people throwing a fit. Always keep in mind that this new hard capping cap is all about removing the unlimited local.

Most people who used to get capped were upset, but not so upset that they would go and buy more accounts, they generally resigned themselves to local internet and just made the most of it they could. Under this new system getting capped is much more severe, your access completely dies. The end result is that people either have to be very frugal or spend more.

Yes, I have been capped, probably one of the first group of TelkomInternet users to get cut off in 2006!?

Used total GB: 15 GB (includes both uploads and downloads)
Date/time the cap was imposed: some time over night between 06/07 January (was on a full 24 hour cycle, so it could have been judged over the limit any time through the day on the 6th I imagine).

My guess at how the TelkomInternet "management system" works (please post your thoughts if you know any better):

Although the usage e-mail says "your service may be discontinued once the average usage for all subscribers has been reached" users are probably pooled based on some form of their usage history. So for example, because I was amongst the heaviest users in Dec (probably, about 75GB), so I have probably been pooled with other "heavies/abusers/whatever" for Jan. Presumably our average has now gone well-over a prescribed limit (wonder what this is, my bet is that it is actually more than 3GB, possibly 10 GB). So all users in that pool who have now gone over their cap (3GB in my case) are now cut off. Those who haven't reached their cap yet are OK, but will probably be axed the moment they do go over (well as soon as they need to get a renewed IP address anyway).

Other people who did much less traffic in Dec will possibly be in a lower usage pool, maybe even with users who never get anywhere near their cap. So they may still be able to run up much higher numbers this month. They might find themselves in a different pool in Feb though if they go for it.

NB: This is just my guess as to how it may work, don't take this as gospel! Things I would like to know if my theory is right:

1. How big are the pools of users?
2. What is the "real" usage amount (average) at which pool members start getting hard capped?
3. How does your "history" get calculated? Will I still be pooled as an "abuser" in 3 months/years time, or will I be able to slip back into the masses if I consistently use less?
4. If I were to buy a new username would it go into the low usage pool?

You can probably see from this where my thinking is headed - if you could afford it and the "history" factor was reset quite quickly you could probably reach relatively huge numbers every month with multiple accounts - if you knew how to play the system. Not that I'm planning to. But I would be interested to see the comments of others who have been giving this some thought.

I very much doubt Telkom has the ability or foresight to group users into "usage pools".

More likely, it is a random thing, or at best, the top x users per week are capped.

As for the lack of response to this thread, I sincerely hope it is because most forumites prefer not to support TelkomInternet.

qwert, thanks for letting us know that you are capped!

lets see if other heavy users get capped today

as to your guess how the capping works, I also doubt quite a bit if it is that complicated, but you never know ... so lets get feedback from more capped users before we jump to any conclusions!

thanks again

Agreed - thanks qwert. I certainly wouldn't put it past the big T to do what you speculate. Going to be interesting to see who is getting capped at what levels and when in the month.

Yes, the question is whether there are any other TI users who are on and about 15GB, and still connected. If they go well past that amount I'd be interested to know about it.

Once people get capped I'd also like to know what their traffic was on the 7th of Jan (to compare with my 15 GB - if they were similar and didn't get capped when I did then it may indicate there is possibly something in my theory). Also I'd like them to tell us what they did in Dec (usage on their ADSL connection that is!!).

Maybe we can uncover some stuff that will be helpfull to all of us.

No matter how I do the maths, the average based useage system doesn't make any sence; in theory according to Telkom, if 1 user over thier cap get cut off then all the others should too. I mean qwert only used 15GB whereas other users used 65GB.

I seriously doubt that Telkomsa averages bandwidth at all... why would they have to they don't buy per GB. How can a company buy bandwidth from it'self???

They should be shut down, but there is so much corruption in this country that they're allowed to operate like this!
