TelkomIternet capped users

Here's a theory I have for what its worth. Bare in mind that i dont claim any great knowledge of the technical side of ADSL.

Would'nt it be more practical for Telkom to pool user's that are in the same contention group? And is'nt it reasonable to assume that user's are in a contention group are all using the same exchange and DSLAM ( or whatever)?

I seem to remember that some users were getting capped fairly early even in november, so I don't think its likely that Telkom's capping based on prior usage.

Quite frankly it looks totally random at this point!!!!

Ja to be honest I think the debate over how they're doing it becomes a bit irrelevent when you consider why they're doing it. It might just as well be totally random.

GOOD POINT!

@ qwert

I also thought that is how telkom caps the users but then again its telkom and to do something like that would require using a brain :D

Knowing how might just prevent an unpleasant surprise.

Yes, I have been capped, probably one of the first group of TelkomInternet users to get cut off in 2006!?

Used total GB: 15 GB (includes both uploads and downloads)
Date/time the cap was imposed: some time over night between 06/07 January (was on a full 24 hour cycle, so it could have been judged over the limit any time through the day on the 6th I imagine).

My guess at how the TelkomInternet "management system" works (please post your thoughts if you know any better):

Although the usage e-mail says "your service may be discontinued once the average usage for all subscribers has been reached" users are probably pooled based on some form of their usage history. So for example, because I was amongst the heaviest users in Dec (probably, about 75GB), so I have probably been pooled with other "heavies/abusers/whatever" for Jan. Presumably our average has now gone well-over a prescribed limit (wonder what this is, my bet is that it is actually more than 3GB, possibly 10 GB). So all users in that pool who have now gone over their cap (3GB in my case) are now cut off. Those who haven't reached their cap yet are OK, but will probably be axed the moment they do go over (well as soon as they need to get a renewed IP address anyway).

Other people who did much less traffic in Dec will possibly be in a lower usage pool, maybe even with users who never get anywhere near their cap. So they may still be able to run up much higher numbers this month. They might find themselves in a different pool in Feb though if they go for it.

NB: This is just my guess as to how it may work, don't take this as gospel! Things I would like to know if my theory is right:

1. How big are the pools of users?
2. What is the "real" usage amount (average) at which pool members start getting hard capped?
3. How does your "history" get calculated? Will I still be pooled as an "abuser" in 3 months/years time, or will I be able to slip back into the masses if I consistently use less?
4. If I were to buy a new username would it go into the low usage pool?

You can probably see from this where my thinking is headed - if you could afford it and the "history" factor was reset quite quickly you could probably reach relatively huge numbers every month with multiple accounts - if you knew how to play the system. Not that I'm planning to. But I would be interested to see the comments of others who have been giving this some thought.

In my understanding, to cap some at 15GIGs and others at much higher usage and some not to be capped at all its considered discriminating.

If the cap is 3GIGs then cap them all and don't discriminate. (never mind the term random)

Maybe in a Court of Law this would be considered discrimination but, not in South Africa and not when the company in question has the "Big Helping Hand"...

My general feeling is the cap is based on a projected total usage for the month worked out from the current usage for the month. This would explain why there seems to be no specific point where you get capped - these figures will fluctuate month to month and user to user.

If the system does work this way it greatly favours people who start their download binge later on in the month.

It's the word average which confuses me. An average is a sum of occurrences of something divided by the number of occurrences.

If this is applied to the number of persons over limit, then this average is going to continuously change and is going to depend on when the average is calculated, how much over the limit has been used, the number of over limit users and the speed of the users.

Mathematically one could get a scenario where
After Calc 1: a single 192Kb/s user reached 3.1GB, where upon the average would be 3.1.

After Calc 2: a single 1024Kb/s user reached 11GB, where upon the average would move up to 10.something GB.

So the whole average thing is a bunch of FUD which allows Telkom to do pretty much as they please. Until they define how they calculate the average(sic).

I tried emailing using the address which appears on their web ([email protected]), but my mail was returned as address unknown. Go figure!

I hear you.
But I think the only way you could actually figure it out is by finding out whos in the same pool and how much everyone else is using. It doesn't seem likely that Telkoms going to help anyone out with the relevant info though.
Its in their best interests to keep the whole thing as mirky and confusing as possible, because their motivation behind this is to destroy the competition and Im sure they're cocerned that, even against them, eventually justice must prevail.
The less their anti-competitve policies are understood and a matter of public record the less can be proved against them at the end of the day.

Absolutely. My suspicion is that it has been introduced with this wording in order to be able to fight ISP's who buy from SAIX(sic) by saying look we are hard capping our users, so you need to too.

Well I just got capped today:(
Downloaded 11.9 gigs
Uploaded 9.1 gigs
total 21 gigs.
Got capped today (7 jan) between 1pm and 2pm :confused:

Last month did about 57 gigs
Two months ago did 84 gigs.
So it looks like it gets lower every month

A friend got capped yesterday between 4pm and 7pm
Also around 21 gigs

so in conclusion I'm behaving:rolleyes: till the 27th:D

I just signed up for a telkom account this month so I will be sure to post what I dl. based on some sort of theory that is going around, I shouldn't be too restricted as I have no history yet but I guess that theory will be blown out of the water for whatever reason.

got capped 8th January, sometime this morning.

Download: 24.2Gigs

Upload:11.9Gigs

Total: 36.2Gigs

so thats that i suppose

7 January

Downloaded : 12GB for the month
Uploaded : 16 GB for the month
Total bandwidth used : 28 GB for the month

Telkom tracker has no stats for Nov 2005.

December 2005: (1st account)

Download = 42.9Gig
Upload = 14.1Gig
Total = 57Gig

Capped on 17 Dec 2005

December 2005: (2nd account)

Download = 51.8Gig
Upload = 14.4Gig
Total = 66.25Gig

Did not get capped - only started to use the account in the middle of the month

January 2006

Download = 18.1Gig
Upload = 6.2Gig
Total = 24.3Gig

Capped on 6 January 2006

Now - there is no correlation between these figures - I tend to agree with other speculation on this site that Telkom does not have a proper formula, but hardcap users at random
