Been wondering on the temp scan procedure at entrances to certain establishments, everytime i get a scan they tell me the temperature and then often also show me the reading and we awkwardly stand there for few seconds looking at each other, so not sure what is expected from me after being entrusted with that sacred information?

Well upon my arrival at Builders Warehouse Tokai a few days ago, I was greeted by the familiar sight of the temperature police.

A cluster of people arrived simultaneously, so I made my way into the queue behind around 7 people ahead of me, all breathing down each other's necks as if it would somehow speed up the process.

Much to my delight, I was greeted by the aforementioned temperature police with a stare which suggested the absolute minimum amount of training and even less grasp of why she was actually employed to perform this function. She did not have the self esteem to assert any control over the mob of would-be customers, nor the intellect to actually CHECK ANY of the temperatures being displayed on the thermometer.

In true South African style, this individual was ticking all of the boxes by scanning the temperatures of every single customer as laid out in the government gazette. However, as with most people employed in such positions, this shining example of responsibility and leadership had absolutely no interest in taking note of the temperatures of any of the customers entering the store. Upon me asking her why she didn't check my temperature, nor any of the customers ahead of me, I was greeted with that quintessential blank stare and awkward silence we all know so well.

The idea that this individual was placed in this position of massive responsibility with the aim of potentially saving lives was all but non-existant. Also non-existent was the use of hand sanitiser by either the cashier, who didn't say a word to me for the remainder of the transaction after I suggested that she clean her hands before poking around inside the box of the item I was purchasing.

As a last pièce de résistance to top off my morning, I had to part ways with my till slip at the exit which security INSIST on checking to make absolutely certain that I'm only leaving the store with 1 drill instead of 17. They made double sure to go through the slip in great detail, squeezing the paper between the finger and thumb to make certain that both sides of the receipt were contaminated, before returning it to me and allowing me to leave the store with my own property. All of this, obviously, without a single hand sanitiser bottle in sight.

Great work Builders! Keep the flag flying high.

Yeah but your temperature was checked, so all good

My temperature scan at Builders over the weekend revealed I was "Lo"...
Same thing happened to me at the car wash, so the dude decided to guess my temp and fill it into his sheet.
There was a cold front and I was out in the wind. The look on his face when it said LO was like "I was not trained for this"

Even at the car wash already? I hope it wont get to the public toilets as some will be denied entrance due to high temp after an intensity jog to get there...

My friend was telling me that they are doing it at the doctors surgery as well, that's very odd I think because the you there is cause you are running hot.

The temperature scan is important to know whether you're allowing anyone in with a fever and as such - a possible COVID-19 infection.

The problem, almost every place I've been to is not scanning properly, or not using the tool properly. So one wonders how effective it is.

Ideally everyone should get those hi-res infrared cameras installed everywhere that can do fever identification without stopping movement. As soon as it flags a possible infected, they can send 2 or more properly protected guards to remove the person from the store as they're posing a risk.

Climbing out of a hot car and got scanned 41 C

Got scanned in super cold weather and hit 18 C

They dont seem to find it funny when I say oh noes I have hyperthermia when they give me my 34 odd degree temp.:(

I despise this practice by Builders. Unless i need the slip for warranty purposes i refuse to show it to them. Or just drop it on their little podium and walk off.
They want to accuse me of stealing (and that is what they imply) they should have the police there to back them up.
