Thought I'd post a few notables about the iPad I got a few days ago...
1. Its aluminium backing got nicked on the third day I had it. Wish I'd gotten an Apple or Belkin jacket for it straight away, but that R700 price tag put me off (R1200 for the Apple one!). The $29 one from Amazon is on its way though.
2. Best show-off trick to impress friends with: The screen rotates 360 degrees. It's always the right side up.
3. The sync cable I got with my iPod Classic doesn't work with the iPad. Unless you have hours and hours to watch the iPad go through the sync motions. Why don't they tell you this??
4. An iPad is a very expensive digital frame if you're sticking to the SA app store. 'Nuff said.
5. Of course, the seamless iTunes syncing is amazing. Especially after struggling to get my Android Galaxy S to sync. I wonder how the Android tablets are going to fare.
6. Speaking of which, thank goodness I have an Android phone otherwise my app store bill would have been twice as high. Some apps that are paid for on the iPad (Angry Birds is one) are free on Android. In general the Android App Market apps don't cost anything, and more-over, they'refreely available to SA citizens.
7. Don't try doing Wordpress blog updates on the iPad. It sucks. Lots of room for app improvement here.
8. With graphic and photo apps such as Camerabag and tInk, emails, Facebook updates and other social networking stuff aren't just messages anymore, they're works of art. And online reading finally comes to age with things like Flipboard. While it's thin on content, the Guinness Book of World Records is the first time that I've seen an intergrated multimedia publication that works. And it works 'cos it's on iPad.
9. The iPad has a slightly 'under-utilised' feel to it. About half the apps I want haven't been ported from the iPhone, and settling for blurry graphics, especially in racing games isn't on. The potential of the iPad still hasn't nearly been explored enought, especially around blogging, photo integration, and some office applications. I'm glad I got in on the ground floor to see it happen. There's no doubt tablet computing is going to change the way we interact with technology. Totally.
10. The little adapters that let you plug SD cards and other connectors into the iPad are on order from Amazon, but Apple will be stupid if they don't include a USB connector with the next iPad edition. Cloud computing is on its way, but until it becomes commonplace, we need to plug things in.
Last note: While I love the Galaxy S and its Android OS, I must say it crashes sometimes (bad apps mostly), is relatively slow (I fixed that but it's a geeky thing) and as mentioned syncing remains dicy. However if I had to pay for iPad AND iPhone apps I would be bankrupt by now... Android's really easy on the pocket, the apps are mostly the same standard as the Apple ones, and it's fun to be able to customise so much of it.
Last last note: I bought the wife a Kindle for her birthday. Let's just say I hope she doesn't buy one for mine...
