So, as some of you know the AFP on my Audi was expiring and I decided to look elsewhere. I've owned two Volvo (T5) before and despite people ripping me off, I enjoyed them. Service was great as well - so I decided to pop to a Volvo dealer Saturday 19th November ...

At the date, I saw a 2013 Volvo listed at R280,000 that I expressed interest in and requested maintenance / accident / service history. I was told this would be done Monday as no one is available. Fair enough.

Monday comes and I hear nothing the entire day. Towards the end of the afternoon though, I travel to the dealer to get a value on the Audi. I wait while he scan, photos etc and he tells me he'd have figures for me the following day.

Tuesday nothing happens - no figures, no history - nothing.

Wednesday nothing happens - no figures, no history - nothing. That evening a write to the DP (copy HO) and ask how long this process is and whether I'm asking too much for a bit service.

Thursday - after seeing the mail - they contact me and tell me how they'll assist. Against, drag their heels but I got a figure on the car. F&I phones and sends application form, which is returned the same day.

Friday - I request again the history of the vehicle and no answer. F&I phones to give me a amount that I'll pay which sounds exorbitant. I ask for the OTP to see how they get to this.

I have no idea where they get the price ... charging for number plates, on the road and registration (R6,200ish)?
Smash & Grab I'm almost certain it has and the rest, I don't want.

Just curious - do they charge number plates on a used car? Sadly, this is an actual dealer ... one has to beg to buy a car (we're now at Day 6 of the process). In contrast, I pointed out my Audi at 9.00am and has trade/figures/interest rate at 15:00 the same afternoon. Two days later I drove the car home.

THey want you to be REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY sure you want another volvo ;)

VAT on a second hand vehicle? I was under the impression they would only pay VAT on the profit they make... And besides, you saw it for R280k, that price is VAT inclusive surely, since when are prices to the public displayed ex VAT?

Or am I being very confused this late on a Friday?

I agree with you.

The window is R280,000 - I told him now to step outside and look at the price to confirm. He says R280,000 - but I must come through tomorrow morning to chat about the line items.

And also number plates on a used vehicle?

You'll be getting new ones iirc. Whether R500 is reasonable I don't know.

I checked on my OTP for my used cars :

1st car was R5,000 (2010 Audi S4)
2nd car was R4,500 (2013 Audi A5)

People pay "On The Road" fees? I thought that was a joke by car dealers?

Great car by the way... One of us, one of us, one of us

Volvo Cape Town? Then again, whether it's Volvo Cape Town, Cape City VW or any other dealer in the CMH group, their service is bad right through.

Volvo West Rand ... CMH Group :/

I'm amazed that you are still carrying on down this road and did not simply walk away?

I want to ...

But believe it or not, V40 T5s aren't that common. R Designs even less so (I think it's 1 of 2 for sale)

EDIT : 9 x T5 on Autotrader and this actually the only T5 R Design

Is there any way to see whether a vehicle has been in an accident ?

Generally I'd trust when a manufacturer dealer says something, but I'm not 100% sure with this dealer. The car is listed is R289,950 on Autotrader but the sticker on car reflects R279,950. It's reflected that price when I saw it both Saturday and Monday. Yesterday when I told him to pop out and check the price, he confirmed R279,950.00

Today I walk in and it's listed as R289,950 again ... he says I can check online. I insisted that it was cheaper and he agreed on the lower price. Can't believe it actually :/

DEKRA test will tell you if there was any repair to the vehicle.

Walk away. Too many shenanigans with this

An item advertised at its price I pay for. Hidden costs get loaded i tell the sales person to stick it up his ring piece.
Walk out and find an honest person.

Yea, I told him that it was never R290,000 on the board and he gave the price I saw. But just the fact that a week down the line once the deal is due to go ahead, he takes a chance like that.

Sinbad - I'd love to, but as mentioned the car comes along every few months if lucky. They're fairly rare and I'm hoping once I get passed this dealer, things will be smooth.

I've seen a smaller T4 non R Design Cross Country which is also quite nice. But that's at a dealer called Alans Auto ... And I've got this mental block about these used car dealers that pop up on the side of the road ...
