'Terrorist' ringtone offensive

Rulings like this force cultures to melt down and change. It is not unacceptable to one part of society, but because we live in a multicultural society and multi-faith society many folks have to back down or quiet down on stuff they don't necessarily find offensive for the sake of the sensitivities of others. Sometimes it is a good thing, but more often than not I think it is bad.

Please explain how it's bad not to piss more Muslims off?

I'll give you this.

Yes if Islamic Armies march on the West, the West will stand up and fight back. However that is not happening. What is happening is that a possibly small group of extremists can take things to extremes and they can use any pretext to gain support. At the same time we rely on many Muslims in countries like Afganistan, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Emirates, Malaysia,
etc to stand with us against the forces of extremism.

So we don't want to piss them off. If that means no Muhammed Jokes or cartoons - I'll give you a clue here - I REALLY DON'T CARE.
If Richard Dawkins or another idiot like Salman Rushdie gets gagged
I REALLY DON'T CARE. I really don't see insulting Islamists as an expression
of freedom of speech, because I don't have a problem with Islamists.
If they come after me - I will defend myself or if they attack my country
I will support a response but they are not doing that at present and I have
no interest in escalating things to that.

So Antowan, while you may want your Islamic cartoons with your morning coffee and call it freedom of speech I don't find sense in that satire nor entertainment and I certainly don't see a need to endager my life or my
well being for the sake of some publisher's profits.

And no LIBERTY or DEATH does not apply here. We have liberty and we can mock Muslims but I choose not to excercise that because I have no interest in doing so. Honestly. Thank you.

I do care. They throw a tantrum and everyone should suddenly "Yes Boss"? No way. Common

Freedom of speech FTW.

+1

In any case. The ASA got this one wrong imo. I would have LOL-ed at the idiot that reported this. They should have thrown it out on 1 small little technical detail... "Achmed" != "Ahmed"

Aḥmad, أحمد, Ahmed, حمد, praise, highly praised, Muhammad, Mohammed, Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullāh, محمّد, Allāh ... GOD

Someone show me Achmed... Unless the advert clearly states "Ahmed" or if "Achmed" is also "Ahmed"*, I don't see where this "confusion" with GOD, terrorism and a lifeless, comic-relief puppet could have slipped in?

* If that is the case, the complaint still does not have much merit imo. This post should not offend anyone. If it does, .... PM me? ;)

Oh come on thats just being ridiculous, can people not have any fun any more???????

No. 'Achmed puts terrorists in a bad light' - lol, Since when do we care about terrorists feelings?
Correction, the dude that contacted the ASA thought that with "Achmed" we meant his God. He clearly forgot that there can be more than one person/thing in the world with the same name

You are qualified to presume a diagnosis of a mental disorder on me?
Or you enjoy using clichés?

While I don't think this particular case of Doll in Turban standup comedy is
that anti-Islamic if it offends, keep it off. Its not exactly unavailable by alternate means and if it keeps things cooler not to have it - great.

As said, freedom of speech <> making profits for 3rd parties at my expense.

Ok, but as long as reprisals will only target you and NOT ME, fine.

Secondly this isn't exactly freedom of speech but possibly is mocking
an ethnic group. Look at the guy who is suing Mboweni. He perceived
an insult, so much has freedom of speech done for Tito.

Its called C-O-M-E-D-Y, comedians make fun of every race, religion, man, woman, child, clique, sexuality and job in the world EVERY DAY. It is not offensive but rather insightful how people can laugh at themselves and at each other WITHOUT offense. Would the whole world be like a comedians stage maybe we would all just be a little better off.

Fair enough. Not that there should be any reprisals at all.

Have to agree. This is not really a freedom of speech issue, but I would not see it as mocking/insulting any ethnic group/religion. timgaul is hitting the nail on the head imo. One must be careful with confusing Comedy with something that can be seen as an Insult/Offensive. 2 Totally different things that can be clearly distinguished from each other.

I will now on purpose load this on my phone. No one is going to tell me that this is offensive. You want to complain? Stop bloody blowing yourselves up, freaking idiots.

I am tempted to get this ringtone as well, while previously not have any interest in doing that. Sometimes, when you make an issue out of something, it blows up in your face.....

heh, I think I am either going to annoy the ASA or the mods here! :D

Hey what about the Bubba J puppet?

Is he not offensive towards the redneck community in "The US of A?"

Someone should stand up for the rednecks!!!

One man's comedy is another's insult. It depends on the culture.
If we need Muslims in Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia etc to be friendly
with us against extremists we should try to give something too.

Its not a sign of weakness either.

We should have the right to criticise extremists and religious influences
on these people but do it with validity and with research, you know. :)

What individuals do is not an issue. You can put it on your cellphone but
don't broadcast it on public tv, you know. If things get really bad
and a real war errupts between West and Islam, then we won't have
these considerations. Until then I think we should try to be accommodating.

I agree. Muslim countries are far less accommodating to foreigners.

However taking the morally higher ground also sends a message. :)
