Tesla Model S suffers second fiery crash

Maybe a bit OT but I got into RC planes recently and the batteries are quite dangerous. Known to burst into flame or explode while charging and even at times during operation, our club received a notice in the newsletter this week of a member who left his batteries to charge ( should never be un-monitored ) and they caught flame and burnt his garage down including his other models, tools and sundry. Basically all I'm suggesting is that these high capacity\charge batteries are still slightly unstable, human error obviously helps though :p
 
Well their safety is being proven very well by these crashes, go through walls and smash a tree, yet the driver could get out and run away - obviously he was not hurt. In terms of the fire, we have seen it is kept away from the passenger cell, so no worries. At least you don't have to worry about petrol pouring out under the car and burning you alive - I'll take the spectacular fire show of the Tesla over the burning inside of a petrol car any day.

What happens if the accident was more fatal and knocked out cautiousness or worst you have a blackout and are unable to react fast enough.
Tesla responded that the Model S protected the driver despite the severe crash, and said the driver is buying another Model S.

My point is that people are reacting to Tesla in a negative fashion for no good reason (see share price drop). Cars are dangerous, I have people I knew who have died being burned alive in their petrol cars, no one suddenly stopped buying BMWs or Mercs because of this. If I could have a petrol car that could ensure fuel stayed in the engine bay area only when in an accident I would be realy stoked, unfortunately petrol is a liquid and tends to spill put under the vehicle.

Tesla Model S is the only car to do so well at crash testing they had to try figure out new tests for it (see roll test for the US as an example). The fact that it caught fire due to a horrific accident is no surprise, rather it is great to know that in both instances the occupants came out virtually unscathed.

It would be interesting to know how many people have died in a Porshe/BMW6-7series/other direct competitors in the States since the release of the Tesla and how many accidents those vehicles had. I am willing to bet their figures look a lot worse.
 
Did the car accelerate itself to cause this (like certain Toyotas have been doing)
Or was it driver error?
 
It went through a concrete wall and hit a tree and the driver got out of the car unscathed. That is unbelievable. The fact that it caught fire afterwards is a worry but in both cases they have been such extreme accidents that you wouldn't see it as a serious threat unless you were quite naive and irrational. If the driver was driving almost any other car he would have been injured, possibly seriously.
