Will be interesting to see what insurers make of large volatile battery packs in the home? Shipping to SA will also be horrendously expensive due to the hazardous nature of the product.

You're right: that would be terrible! ;)

I think, in a South African context, he is one of ours and I think it's fine to remember that. AFAIK, he was educated at PBHS, so whether he is now American or considers himself American is besides the point. As is the nationality of his mother.

His cousin, also educated here I believe, heads up the Solar City arm and I would be very surprised if they don't both keep a watchful eye on developments in this Country. Indeed, I would say that our situation under Eskom makes us prime prospective customers of this technology.
 
Duties on lithium batteries have been reduced from 10% to 0.
Only automotive lead acid battery import duties increased.

FYI. The modern Lithium Battery was invented by a South african researcher at the CSIR.
