Hi! I found this link to test your connection speed by downloading 4 x 128K (it's worth a try) . Please try it and paste your result here saying which method of connection you're using, network, time etc.

Here's my result at 7 am this morning .probably a v quiet time - last night was about 10 times slower on the Virgin Network, PC connected to Nokia 6230i via USB.

Result:

First 128K 6479 msecs: Download speed = 20230 Bytes per sec, Approx = 168K bits per sec
Second 128K 5518 msecs: Download speed = 23754 Bytes per sec, Approx = 198K bits per sec
Third 128K 5238 msecs: Download speed = 25023 Bytes per sec, Approx = 208K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 5007 msecs: Download speed = 26178 Bytes per sec, Approx = 218K bits per sec
 
Is that the speed you get on you Virgin Mobile connection??

This is what I get with my Wireless Online connection 512k/256k. It's called the @Home Velocity 1 Package.

Do you use EDGE?

First 128K 5859 msecs: Download speed = 22371 Bytes per sec, Approx = 186K bits per sec
Second 128K 4063 msecs: Download speed = 32260 Bytes per sec, Approx = 268K bits per sec
Third 128K 4281 msecs: Download speed = 30617 Bytes per sec, Approx = 255K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 4250 msecs: Download speed = 30840 Bytes per sec, Approx = 257K bits per sec

First 128K 93094 msecs: Download speed = 1408 Bytes per sec, Approx = 12K bits per sec
Second 128K 67031 msecs: Download speed = 1955 Bytes per sec, Approx = 16K bits per sec
Third 128K 170422 msecs: Download speed = 769 Bytes per sec, Approx = 6K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 55891 msecs: Download speed = 2345 Bytes per sec, Approx = 20K bits per sec

This is what I get with my i-Mate Jasjar using Virgin Mobile Sim. GPRS only, no 3G Coverage.

First 128K 18000 msecs: Download speed = 7282 Bytes per sec, Approx = 61K bits per sec
Second 128K 19000 msecs: Download speed = 6899 Bytes per sec, Approx = 57K bits per sec
Third 128K 22000 msecs: Download speed = 5958 Bytes per sec, Approx = 50K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 23000 msecs: Download speed = 5699 Bytes per sec, Approx = 47K bits per sec
 
12pm Mid-day 4th of July 2006 (Virgin Mobile)

Via GPRS

First 128K 18141 msecs: Download speed = 7225 Bytes per sec, Approx = 60K bits per sec
Second 128K 14000 msecs: Download speed = 9362 Bytes per sec, Approx = 78K bits per sec
Third 128K 16500 msecs: Download speed = 7944 Bytes per sec, Approx = 66K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 14250 msecs: Download speed = 9198 Bytes per sec, Approx = 77K bits per sec
 
Virgin Mobile only Supports GPRS and EDGE, sofar as i know.. They told me, their only getting 3g in September..

I doubt if normal GPRS could get 168K bits per sec.. I think thats EDGE

Some phones support GPRS and 3g.. and not EDGE. Others support GPRS and EDGE but not 3g.. So its a tuff one..
 
i was lucky this morning to get those speeds! last night was 10 times slower.

VM/Cell C has EDGE in my area and my phone is a 6230i (it's an EDGE capable phone) so it must be an EDGE connection.

I tried it now at 1.58pm. Look at the difference!!!! It must be related to how busy the network is. VM is using Cell C at the moment so I figure that network must be overloaded or is it??

Are you a test pilot for the 3G service??

this is the Cell C Edge/ GPRS area. Dont get us that excited!!::p :D

that was @ 3pm vodacom GPRS (no 3G in Ladismith yet)
will try 2morrow on hsdpa.

seems to be quite good. But I think I am the only 1 in this place that use the service currently.

WIth MTN HSDPA Card... only on EDGE

Second 128K 5078 msecs: Download speed = 25812 Bytes per sec, Approx = 215K bits per sec
Third 128K 5204 msecs: Download speed = 25187 Bytes per sec, Approx = 210K bits per sec
