Hey guys,

So, two months ago I ditched the Adam and got a good deal on an A1 - 1.4TFSI with DSG with 60k on the clock.

Anyways the car was serviced just after I got it at 60k still under motorplan which ran out a week later....

I'm finding that the car sounds kind of rough in the morning or when you first start it, kind of diesel like....

I'm also finding that 1st gear is quite jerky on a slight uphil or in stop start traffic, it almost feels like it's not slipping the clutch and just straight up dropping the clutch and you jerk forward with the slightest of acceleration... 2nd gear and the rest are butter smooth and this doesn't happen unless you are on even a slight uphill...

Just wanted some input, I did purchase an additional warranty which covers the gearbox for R25k and the engine for R30k should anything be wrong...

Was the clutch pack replaced before? Otherwise a software upgrade at the dealership usually sorts out any jerkiness, which is sometimes a problem on the DSG box at slower speeds. The upgrade is normally a few 100's when charged to the plan.

Also, while you're at it, check if the oil change for the DSG was done, the service interval for the oil change is 60k. Quite important for the longevity of the box.

I also thought so... There was a rattle in my door they did not fix because they were waiting on a part, and I am still waiting so I will take it back and ask when they have the parts..

from my personal experience with 2 cars with the DSG box , Reverse gear is very "choppy" but all forward gears are smooth. I did have a similar issue you are describing with a BMW I had previously a software upgrade fixed that, out of warranty I think I was charged like R800.00 at Clearwater BMW.

Thanks. I will take her back in and see what is what... I am a little concerned that this car has a tow bar, so I am hoping the PO wasn't towing anything heavy in stop start traffic and that's worn the clutch faster..

I read online you basically want to "reset" the gearbox, it should fix it. I am not sure if you can do it on the the 7speed s-tronic, you could on the older 6 speed dsg.

"1 Put your key in the ignition and turn ignition to the on position (don't start the engine!)
2 Hold down the gas pedal pressing the button under the pedal for at least 20 seconds.
3 Let foot off pedal and start car. Be sure that you do no turn ignition off because that will void the reset
(not so sure it still works)

I am doing it once in a while and it seems to work. The DSG after the reset will not shift so quickly and eliminates the juddering from D2-D3. "

Thanks I will try that. I have the 7 speed, D2 - D3 is smooth, it's just pulling off in D1...

What also boggles my mind is that when you are crawling in D - it will shift into 2nd at like 5kmh but when in manual mode you can't shift to second until the revs hit like 2k... Apparently if you can shift into 7th in manual mode the software has been updated :(

No one else concerned about the diesel-like sounds on start-up?

Was wondering the same. That's exactly what my B6 A4 sounded like back in the day, when it popped its turbo on 70 000kms...

My Golf 6 TSI sounds exactly like a diesel on a coldstartup, but that's only after 2days+ of not driving.

According to VW it's normal.

My guess is, the oil moves down when the car is not running for a few hours/days, so when you finally start it up the oil has to circulate back up again. The noise goes away after 20sec of idling, assuming the oil is circulated fully -- that's my guess

Thanks guys, I tried the reset this morning and it seems a little better but haven't been in any traffic yet so will see later

This will answer your question about DSG
