Thabo links corruption and poverty

Just read the article, nope, the word accountability still doesn't feature.

Nice try T-Bone, I'm not buying it.

He continues to be an embarrassment to south africa every time he opens his mouth. I wish he would just shut up already.

thats funny
because if thats the case, and if its poverty and not greed as he claims, what the hell does he want us to do about it?

Most of the corruption in the country stems from government or public institutions.. home affairs, the police, etc...

So if he truely believes thats the problem he just needs to pay his staff better..

Edit: maybe he expects us to start tipping policemen when they open cases for us

Yes well thats the point. They want to push a bill through approving a massive pay rise for MPs as far as I remember.

Yup, well spotted. I think it's about a 57% pay increase for El Presidente himself and then a few others are going along for the ride. Funny, no one asked me, the tax payer who funds this pay increase, if I thought it was a good idea? I think they can have pay increases that match inflation but not a penny more :D

Ja, all those POOR MPs who stole all that cash from Parliament were not corrupt, they were just mislead by the temptation. ..... Y e a h r i g h t !! ;)

Distorted Sick minds this ANC. Poverty causes corruption? Bullsh@t Greed does. The more they get the more they want. Poverty may lead to petty crime YES! But corruption and mayor crime is due to Low or no morals, guilt, Brain-sick individuals (Psychos) and greedy politicians like the majority of the ANC as well as Company representatives BEE and AA the greater culprit giving power to individuals that cannot handle it.

Edit PS: I wonder, Is their a link why he (Mbeki) wants a 57% payrise? Must be.

You guys are clearly misquoting Thabo.

In the article he clearly condems corruption,

"... Corruption in all its forms and manifestations, constitute a process that negates the democracy and development the ordinary people need to transcend the boundaries of their world of poverty, underdevelopment and disempowerment," the president said, opening the 5th Global Forum on Anti-Corruption at Sandton in Johannesburg.

He also states that to effectively deal with corruption you need a multi-faced approach that amongst other things includes dealing with poverty. He does not say poverty is the only cause for corruption.

"The anti-corruption discourse therefore is inseparable from broader goals of socio-economic development. They must be firmly located within a development and anti-poverty discourse that promotes citizen engagement, a people's contract that binds the democratic state to the citizenry and promotes the value of human solidarity and public accountability."

Please note the piece about public accountability.

No misquotes I'm afraid. Corruption in it's most basic sense is not in any way linked to poverty, but as someone else already pointed out - it is in fact linked with greed. That's the issue. Poverty has been linked with various things including crime, but this latest link is a stretch of the imagination - even for T-Bone.

Oh come on, lets see some action for a change instead of more of T-bone's ramblings.
