I have been playing with different chipsets in routers this past couple of days seeing the annotation change when the routers chipset change.

This morning I look and they downgraded my line from 10 meg line to a 4 meg line.
The router I'm currently using has high attenuation 42.5 dB using ITU G.992.1(G.DMT) and with a snr of 17.0 dB.

This should give me a theoretical max line speed with this router of 8 meg a sec. Yet for some reason they don't downgrade me to a 8 meg line but rather a 4 meg line. I would please like a Telkom rep to explain to me how you can just change a package I'm on which should actually been seen as a contract without my consent!

This is completely unexceptable!

Option 1: Call them and ask if and why there was a change... Tell them you wanted "Telkom Faster Plus ADSL" https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/shop/home/plan/faster-plus-adsl/

Option 2: Move you line to another ISP, and let them sort it out for you... My DSL line is managed by Axxess.

An 8Mbps line with Axxess will cost you R355pm, and with Telkom it costs R399pm

With Axxess, you can bundle the line and data and save even more.

There may be a chance due to the constant changes that the system thought your line was trashed so it dropped you to 4mb... I may be wrong but I'd give them a call and ask to bump you back to your "actual" speed

Bumping me up would take uptown 48 hours just downgrading without consent is wrong as if I want to upgrade I must sit and hold for about 30 min, while they downgrade instantly. This is completely wrong moving my line is looking like the best option currently!

Theoretical speeds are meaningless in SA if your line is old and cable distance to the exchange is long which seems to be the case if your downstream attenuation is +42dB.

I doubt Telkom have changed your package but maybe you should downgrade to 4Mbps if that's all you can achieve on your line.

I was on a 8 meg line and was syncing at 7.9 meg constantly, then checked online that I can upgrade to a 10 meg line so I did. Just spoke to a lady from Telkom and according to her the 10 meg upgrade is still pending. So why the reason for the downgrade if the 8 meg line has been fine for months now and it is shown online according to their system that 10 meg is the max my number can get.

So while the 10 meg upgrade is pending they downgraded me to a 4 meg, I can't seem to find the logic in that.

Moving my line seems like the only logical solution as I can't comprehend why something like this should even be possible.

I suspect NorthPole is correct. ASSIA interpreted your router swaps as line instability and downgraded your sync speed as a result.

BTW, Telkoms coverage map can indicate that 10Mbps is available in your area but 8Mbps might be the best you can get, what was your attainable sync speed on the 8Mbps profile?

And fixed to 8 meg again that was fast service if I do say so myself!

Currently syncing at 8064 kbps on a 8 meg line while my 10 meg upgrade is still pending

I had this as well.

Telkom downed the sync on my line from 10 to 8 megs without letting me know. My ISP had to request that Telkom up the sync from 8 to 10 again.... and now this has happened again.

My line has it's issues on 10Meg, but it works the rest of the time.

For reference, we were on 12Mbps [10Mbps profile] but when the weather gets bad like today or i notice increased latency even with other iSP accounts because CRC increases then i manually change the sync down to the g.dmt profile [8Mbps] and boy is it painless. ASSIA actually kicks in within 96hrs if not less once i change it back to ADSL2+ and it behaves itself on 10Mbps. There are other issues that need sorting out [when my gran's DSTV decoder is switched on, it breaks the sync ] but apart from that, things work.

I must say, ASSIA is a little more intelligent than when it was first implemented. I am guessing this maybe due to it knowing the history of our line. Someone more knowledgeable on the way Telkom has it configured could share their thoughts, would make for a great read :).

tl;dr - if you have bad weather and notice increased CRC, switch your DSL mode/setting to g.dmt and ride it out until things clear, it will cause less headaches. ;)

As for stats, attenuation sits at around 31/34db with SNR between 6.1 - 9db [10Mbps] and 10-13db when on 8Mbps.

Shouldn't take that long. As i understood it there is a person who specifically in charge of changing the sync speeds manually. Tell them specifically that your line was at say 8mb and you want it back there. There is no fault. Just that your profile was dropped.
