Hey All,

You've probably seen these questions loads of times, but I really need your help.

I recently upgraded my relatively stable 384 line to a 4 meg line. Yet my glee and excitement died with the actual speed of the line.

This is the fastest i've seen my line in days, have a look at this:

These are my router's details:

1. Does my router indicate anything wrong? Noise Levels, all that jazz?
2. Is this problem worth complaining about? ie. What are the chances of one being able to mobilise telkom to help?
3. If it is worth complaining, what exactly do I tell them on the phone? "Oh hi, something is wrong with my line speed, i need to log a fault?" Can someone let me know how I should approach is?

Thank you MyBB, rock 'n roll and happy weekend.

Skatch.

Your router is only syncing @ 1056/384, your SNR (Noise Margin) is also very low, which indicates that your line cannot handle a faster speed.

You can try complain and tell them that your line is only syncing at those speeds, but since the service from telkom is "DSL up to 4MB" it is not guaranteed, i doubt they will do anything.

See this for more information - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=46156 - according to that your line would be classified as "poor"

You downstream Line attenuation is 59.0 dB which is quite high thats why it is prob only syncing at 1056 kbps instead of 4096 kbps... u must live far from the exchange..

@ JasonH and luketang56

Thank you both very much. I was worried that this might be a locational and infrastructural problem. Nonetheless, come 8am Monday morning, I will be on that phone requesting assistance. No harm in trying I guess.

Thanks again for your help.

Rather complain about noise on the voice line.

Do not talk to them about ADSL synch rates.
As soon as you do that they go into the "Is your router plagged in" etc. mode
Generally that gets you nowhere.

You have a much better chance if you complain about noise on the voice line.
Also your router could be faulty.
Try and swop it out to test. Or test it at someone else's place that does get 4 MB/s

If your SNR drops below 6.0 your router will also disconnect and resync. I put a post up quiet a few years ago with the tolerances, Not sure where it is now (I'll try search later)

I've got the same problem right now. I returned from Holiday to find that my Router only sync's to 1024. When it used to sync to 4096. I have been trying since the 6th to get a technician out here, and fighting with Telkom as per usual all over again. If the wind blows the line drops, if it rains its down for 5 hours at a time again.

Try and explain to them that it used to work and there is a problem. They have also tried to close the fault 4 times in the last 10 days, and we have had to fight with the call center and spoken to 2 supervisors to get it sorted. This morning we got another SMS saying it had been resolved??????

All I can say is good luck. This happens to me every time it rains and has been happening for 5 years and Telkom just don't care
