The AirTies thread

You could, in theory, extend off the Airties mesh with your existing devices - but the AirTies mesh must be the backbone.
Hmmm ok thank you. I think Ill stay away from adding more complexity for the considerable future... I love messing around with new gear, but the wife gets grumpy if the network is dead.....

Managed to connect everything using the app but there is no internet connection (red cross next to “internet” on app) all lights are green and my network shows that all 3 nodes are connected so not sure what I am doing wrong.

Hi,

Is it possible your devices are connecting to the old SSID that you've now turned off?
Or did you make the SSID the same on the old and the new?

Try go to http://air4920.local while on your network and see what it does?

Thanks so much! I was using my iPhone but can use either.

Good point @Dolby

@MB1974 easiest way to check ip ranges (without going into the control panels of each device) -

Switch off the Airties, and connect to the router's wifi - check you ip on your device (Phone/laptop);
Switch off the routers wifi, and switch the Airties on, and connect to it, and check ip on device again,

I bought triple pack. Connected one to my router and turned off Wifi on router. Managed to connect everything using the app but there is no internet connection (red cross next to “internet” on app) all lights are green and my network shows that all 3 nodes are connected so not sure what I am doing wrong.
I battled for about an hour to get everything working. Connecting via wifi just kept on timing out. Eventually I checked and realized that the lights on ethethernet port were off. Turns out the network cable supplied is rubbish.

Now that everything is up and running it works great!

I can't get to air4920.local anymore. Not sure if its because I'm running it into a gigabit switch which in turn connects to a gigabit port on my router. Nothing wrong with my internet connectivity btw :)

/update : moved the lan cable directly to a free port on the router... same issue

Try entering the following URL: http://air4920.local
I have found that when you just enter air4920.local your browser tries to search the internet for this instead of using mDNS to search for the device on the network.

Yip, app is fine. Everything is fine. Except air4920.local :)

/update : Seems a power cycle on the router resolved the issue for about 1 min or so, then same as before

Thinking of going this route, can you connect all 3 AirTies APs via Ethernet cable or can you only plug one in and then WiFi bounce off the one that’s plugged in? My house is already wired and looking to upgrade from my current mikrotik hAPs as I’ll need a gigabit solution when we upgrade to 200mb fibre soon.

You can do either, or a combination. Plugging them in would generally be better but it's nice to have the flexibility to put them wherever as well.

I installed these at a guesthouse that was using extenders with different SSID's and struggling for coverage. They've been working beautifully and the whole guesthouse is now fully covered with signal.

While initially setting them up I ran into a hiccup where 2 would work, but switching on the third brought the whole network down. I resorted to plugging, doing a factory reset and then unplugging each one individually. And then after running through the setup process again everything worked flawlessly. It took a long time but was worth it.

How well would these work with power line adapters? Has anyone tried?

They would work fine, as long as your powerline adapters are getting good connectivity. You're just bridging an ethernet cable. Using gigabit powerline adapters would help, as the 5GHz network is faster than normal 100mbps ethernet.

Yip, they're pretty decent. Added a 4th one to the mesh in the beginning for better outside coverage, but it stopped working. Eventually got it working again, but it just refused to join the mesh, so to speak. So I unplugged it and it's sitting on my cupboard. Maybe need to pay Nology a visit and see if they can sort it...

I have a node that is getting pretty hot. Is this normal?

I dont smell anything burning and I can touch it, but it feels really hot....

Does anyone have a node/s that they want to sell. I want to add 2 more but Im too stingy to pay R2700 for them.

These things get stupid hot. To a point where it is ridiculous.

Is it ok if my AirTies access point feels warm?
Like other electronic devices, access points are expected to get warm when they’re turned on and operating. Touching your running access point may feel comparable to touching the bottom of a laptop that’s been sitting on your lap and in use for an extended period of time. To ensure your access point is operating at an optimal temperature, please place your access point out in the open. Avoid placing access points inside of containers or in small, enclosed spaces. Don’t cover your access points with other objects. Avoid placing anything on top of it or blocking the air vents in any way. Avoid placing your access points near excessive heat or direct sunlight. Avoid placing your them in locations where they will be in direct sunlight for the majority of the day. Please also avoid placing your access points near heat sources such as fireplaces and heaters. Avoid placing them on soft surfaces. Your access points work best on a stable surface, so avoid putting them on chairs, cushions, and any other surface that doesn’t allow your access points to have space beneath them to breathe. Use the power adapter that came with your AirTies access point. Avoid using third party adapters which may not have been tested for compatibility with AirTies.

Have had a 3-pack AirTies 4920 for ~2 months now and they seem pretty stable. My apartment has a very weird layout but these chaps work fine most of the time. Near impossible to get more than 200Mbps on the units due to extreme WiFi congestion but still pretty impressive that I can get 200Mbps out of 500Mbps total capacity (Lightspeed).

Had strange loop issues with my MikroTik when I first set them up but after a good factory reset and re-configuration, they're working quite well. Every now and then I experience weird issues and a cascading reboot fixes this right up.

I still swear by UniFi and would use UniFi instead if these units weren't as cheap as I got them for.
