Alfa Romeo Giulia estate - first image leaks out

A single image of the Alfa Romeo Giulia estate has leaked, confirming production of the model

The upcoming Alfa Romeo Giulia estate, showing its rear with the bootlid up, has leaked on social media.

The picture reveals the load space and interior, but not the rear styling. However, the model is very similar to the Giulia saloon, with dual exhausts, a low rear diffuser and rakish boot hatch line.

We can also see loading rails running along the boot floor, as well as 60/40 split-folding rear seats and a ski hatch function in the middle.

The Giulia estate is likely to be the next model released by Alfa, following the Stelvio SUV unveil at LA motor show. It’s also expected that the model would be revealed at the Geneva motor show in March.

The Giulia estate – which may take the Sportswagon name of its 159 predecessor – will not have class-leading bootspace, as Alfa’s design team is aiming for a more sporting appearance rather than a huge load area. Expect a similar volume to the BMW 3 Series Touring.

It will not, however, be as dramatically-styled as the 159 Sportswagon, which when certain seat configurations were selected, had a smaller luggage volume than the saloon. Engines are almost certain to be shared with the Giulia saloon, although it’s not expected to gain a range-topping Quadrifoglio variant. It’s not yet known if a warm Veloce spec will be added, though.

An Alfa Romeo BMW 5 Series rival is also tipped to reach production, although the company is tentative, given the decline in saloon sales from the rise of the SUV.

Sneak peek! Alfa Romeo show racy Giulia editions in SA

Johannesburg - Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, importers of the Alfa Romeo brand in South Africa hosted an exclusive premiere of the highly-anticipated Alfa Romeo Giulia at a gala event held at the Inanda Club in Sandton.

The event was exclusively for confirmed buyers of the new Giulia Launch and Race Editions due for arrival on local shores in early 2017. The first 46 orders for Alfa Romeo of the new model were snapped up within three days of the order book opening at local dealerships.

0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds

The exclusive premiere comes almost three months ahead of the official launch of the entire Giulia range in South Africa, illustrating the importance of the first vehicles and their buyers.

The Launch and Race Edition vehicles are based on the top-of-the-range Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde derivative. Powered by a Ferrari developed 2.9-litre V6 Bi-Turbo engine, the Giulia QV powerplant produces 375kW/600Nm of torque driving the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission that returns performance figures of 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds and a top speed governed to 307km/h.

Range due in March 2017

Both the Launch and the Race Editions are available in limited numbers affording in advance of the rest of the range which expected in March 2017.

The Race Edition features Carbon ceramic brakes that offer fade-free braking under all driving conditions, as well as the unique Tri-coat paint colour; Mineral White or Red Competition.

The complete Alfa Romeo Giulia range will feature the Giulia QV as well as the Giulia 2.0-litre in three derivatives; Base, Super, and Super Lux. The entry-level variants feature a 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol engine with 147kW/330 Nm of torque driving the rear wheels through an eight speed automatic transmission.

The full model line-up is expected locally from early March 2017.
