Alfa Romeo is busy preparing for a big reveal in June and although it may be a small crossover, we are secretly hoping it is a hotter version of the Giulia.

US site Mopar Insiders reports that the Italian firm could revive its historic GTA nameplate for the new model, which is also expected to weigh around 20kg less than the standard model.

The new ‘Quadrifoglio GTA’ is likely to use an uprated version of the standard model’s 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 producing as much as 460 kW.

If the report turns out to be the real deal, we’re going to see the Giulia GTA on June 24 during a special event organized in Milan to mark the company’s milestone – 110th anniversary.

Alfa Romeo has fuelled rumours that it's plotting a high-performance flagship version of its Giulia Quadrifolgio performance saloon with a new preview video.

Posted to Twitter, the clip confirms that Alfa Romeo will unveil an important new model at the Geneva motor show but gives no details about its design, purpose or name. An accompanying engine note, however, bears a strong similarity to that of the existing Giulia Quadrifoglio's 2.9-litre V6, suggesting it could be a new variant of the performance saloon.

Specific technical features and functional style

For the new Giulia GTA, Alfa Romeo engineers have striven to improve aerodynamics and handling but above all to reduce weight: the same guidelines followed for the 1965 Giulia GTA. The active aerodynamics were specifically studied to increase the downforce. These solutions contain technical know-how that comes directly from Formula 1, thanks to the synergy with Sauber Engineering and the use of the Sauber Aerokit. The same task is assigned to the side skirts, the specific rear spoiler and the active front splitter. The titanium Akrapovi? central exhaust system integrated in the carbon fiber rear diffuser is also new, as are the 20-inch center lock wheels, appearing for the first time on a sedan. The handling at high speeds has been improved by widening the front and rear wheel tracks by 50mm and developing a new set of springs, shock absorbers and bushings for the suspension systems. On GTAm, the aerodynamic front piece has been optimized to an extreme level, by adding a larger front splitter and a real carbon rear wing, which ensure a perfectly balanced load at high speeds. In terms of performance, the powerful 2.9 V6 Bi-Turbo, made entirely of aluminum and capable of unleashing no less than 510 hp in the standard configuration, reaches a power output of 540 hp on Giulia GTA, thanks to meticulous calibration work performed by Alfa Romeo engineers. The same team has also succeeded in optimizing the implementation of the new Akrapovi? specific exhaust system, with its unmistakable sound.

The new Giulia GTA is the most powerful road car Alfa Romeo has built and packs a raft of mechanical and dynamic upgrades over the current Quadrifoglio range-topper.

The historic GTA nameplate, which stands for Gran Turismo Alleggerita, has been revived to indicate the new car’s lightweight construction and performance potential. Alfa referred to the car’s unveiling as “a momentous comeback”, signifying a return to performance car construction.

The GTA takes its power from the same twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 engine as the Quadrifoglio, but calibration tweaks and the addition of a titanium Akrapovic exhaust help to boost its output from 503bhp to 533bhp. They’re also claimed to give the car a unique soundtrack.

Alfa Romeo has taken the wraps off two special new versions of its Giulia Quadrifoglio, dusting off the GTA and GTAm badges in the process.

The company says it will build a total of 500 units, without revealing the production split between the two variants.

Conceived to celebrate 110 years of the Italian brand (and, of course, pay tribute to the original Alfa Romeo GTA of 1965), the new Giulia GTA features four seats while the Giulia GTAm pares things back to just two race seats, complete with a roll-bar and six-point harnesses.

Both variants, though, draw their urge from an updated version of the twin-turbo 2,9-litre V6 already used by the Giulia Quadrifoglio (as well as the Stelvio Quadrifoglio). In the GTA and GTAm, however, peak power has been hiked from 375 kW to 397 kW.

Alfa Romeo Unveils Hardcore Giulia GTA

The Alfa Romeo Giulia didn't need a performance version and yet the Italians have gone on and reincarnated the iconic GTA nameplate.

Limited to just 500 units, the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA is a lighter and faster version of the already quick Giulia Quadrifoglio. Built to celebrate 110 years of Alfa Romeo, the new Giulia GTA boasts some upgrades to give it a hardcore track focus. Think of this as Alfa Romeo's answer to the BMW M4 GTS and Jaguar XE Project 8.

The 2.9-litre biturbo V6 sourced from Ferrari has been given some tweaks, with power now rated at 403 kW, from 375 kW and 600 Nm. There's a new Akrapovic titanium exhaust system, identified by the large central exhausts. Performance figures are decent, with a 0-100 kph of 3.6 seconds - a marked improvement over the standard car's 0-100 kph in a claimed 3.9 seconds.

Alfa Romeo’s legendary GTA badge is back with an AMG-crushing vengeance, with the Italian brand having just unleashed its most powerful production car ever, the Giulia GTA.

As the GTA acronym promises (it stands for Gran Turismo Alleggerita, the latter translating to ‘lightened’) the new super saloon is 100kg lighter than the Giulia Quadrifoglio that it’s based on, and it uses a more powerful version of its 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine.

Alfa Romeo will also be selling a racing version called the Giulia GTAm, which is still street legal, but equipped with two racing seats with six-point safety harnesses as well as a roll bar in place of the back seats.

But let’s get to the heart of the matter - Alfa Romeo’s twin-turbo V6 has been beefed up to the tune of 403kW, up from the QV’s 380kW, and to ensure a soundtrack that’s nothing less than spine-tingling, the GTA gets an Akrapovic exhaust system.

The extra urge, combined with the lower kerb weight of 1520kg, makes the GTA three tenths of a second quicker from 0-100km/h if we go according to factory figures, with Alfa Romeo quoting a sprint time of 3.6 seconds.

Ladies and gents, the Alfa Romeo GTA moniker is back in the form of a hotter version of the Giulia Quadrifoglio.

The brand new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA (Gran Turismo Alleggerita) sheds 100 kg compared to the regular Quadrifoglio offering and can sprint to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. If this is not hardcore enough, they have another offering for you called the GTAm which comes with just two seats, six-point harnesses, and a roll bar, while remaining fully street legal.

In addition to its diet, the new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA packs an updated version of the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 that now produces 533 horsepower (398 kW), rather than the existing 505 hp (377 kW).

The Giulia GTA makes use of carbon fibre for the front bumper, roof, hood and fenders and features an active front splitter developed by Sauber Engineering. At the back, there is a prominent rear wing sitting on the boot and the revised rear bumper and diffuser houses an Akrapovič titanium exhaust with a pair of circular outlets at the centre. The GTAm version gets a slightly larger front splitter and the rear wing is finished in carbon.

Upping the ante

In standard trim, the bi-turbo 2.9-litre V6 engine develops 375kW in the Giulia Quadrifoglio. For application in the Giulia GTA, power has been increased to 403kW! This is coupled to a reduction in weight and ‘active aerodynamics’ to help increase downforce.

Alfa Romeo says that they tapped into their Formula 1 resources by utilizing the technical know-how of Sauber Engineering and the Sauber Aerokit.

Furthermore, a more hardcore version of the GTA is also being readied, called the GTAm. According to Alfa Romeo, “the Giulia GTAm is an extreme 100% “street legal” version of the GTA, characterized by two racing seats, roll bar, and 6-point safety belts."

Alfa Romeo says that the Giulia GTA will clear the 0-100km/h time in 3.6 seconds.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and its extreme version, Giulia GTAm, will be built in a limited edition of only 500 units in total, all numbered, certified, and ready to take up their place alongside their 1965 forerunner.

Alfa Romeo’s Giulia GTA is coming to South Africa

It’s been an enchanting week for the Alfa Romeo tifosi with the return of the GTA badge in a super-potent and lightweight version of the Giulia, and now there’s good news for those wanting to buy one in South Africa.

After reaching out to FCA South Africa on the topic, our contact said: “We are trying to get allocation for this year still, but officially only 2021”.

Better late than never in our book... But at this stage it remains unclear exactly how many units would make their way to our shores, but we wouldn’t bargain on more than a handful given that only 500 examples of the Giulia GTA and its race-equipped GTAm counterpart are going to be produced for global consumption.

Given its exclusive nature, as well as all the advanced materials and technologies that have gone into this car, it almost goes without saying that buyers will pay a substantial premium over the Giulia QV’s R1.4 million price tag.

As reported earlier this week, the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA is 100kg lighter than the Giulia Quadrifoglio that it’s based on, and it uses a more powerful version of its 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine, which has been beefed up to the tune of 403kW (versus the QV’s 380kW).

Flip that is a seriously hot car.
I have a massive soft spot for Alfa having grown up with them always being around. My dad had a pretty good collection of them.
There is a family in EL that has a collection of over 30 worth many millions.
