The Alfa Romeo Giulia Thread

Nearly-new buying guide: Alfa Romeo Giulia

You can now get one for less than half its price new. And here's how

Anyone bored with the same-old, same-old offerings in the executive car class has, since 2016, been able to cast a little wider and bag a deeply competitive and wonderfully charismatic saloon with an Alfa Romeo badge. You see, the Giulia is a really compelling alternative that competes on performance, running costs and driving experience, and for which none of the old Alfa apologies is needed.

From launch, the choice of engines has started with a 197bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol and increased to 276bhp with the Veloce and Veloce Ti versions. The diesel range stems from a 2.2-litre four-cylinder with either 148bhp or 177bhp. Then there’s the top-of-the-range Quadrifoglio – a car so good that it’s best reserved for its own separate guide – with a 503bhp 2.9-litre V6. All engines come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

Whether you buy this Alfa is going to come down to your priorities, and what you’re prepared to trade.

Dynamically, the Giulia isn’t as sharp as the new 3 Series. However, its gait is more mature and the chassis is more satisfying to guide at a canter. The cabin is also possibly the more refined of the two, at least in terms of pure isolation, and all of the above gives the Giulia an enjoyable and thoroughbred GT-style character – one the romantic exterior feeds into at all times and in all places.

What you won’t get in the 3 Series – or the Audi A4, or to some extent the Mercedes C-Class – are the day-to-day niggles, such as the indicators or choppy adaptive cruise control. Although much improved, the infotainment array also falls behind BMW's iDrive in several key ways. It means those who like to be reminded that they’re driving the opulent product of precision engineering still won’t fall for the Alfa as easily as they might for the others.

And yet in almost every other way, the Giulia is the most enticing car in its class. Charisma and that fine-handling chassis, only now with added comfort and convenience… it's a special blend.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

Even with its lightly revamped interior, the Alfa still doesn’t quite live up to the likes of the Mercedes-AMG C63 S in terms of premium appeal. For some, its V6 soundtrack might pale in comparison to the C63's raucous V8, too.

But as a driving tool, the Alfa Romeo remains an exceptional device. With a starting price of £67,195, it’s the best part of £10,000 cheaper than the Merc as well. Sure, there have been tales of classic Alfa unreliability, but even so, it’s hard to believe that the Giulia Quadrifoglio isn’t deserving of a far greater level of sales success than it currently achieves.

Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm Reimagined As A Supercar Looks On Point

Alfa Romeo took the covers off the hardcore Giulia GTA and GTAm in March but what if they continued on this path and developed a supercar?

The rendering artists from Carlifestyle gave it a bash and the result looks like a serious Ferrari 488 Pista competitor.

A new video (below) shows the car being driven in anger for the first time since it was revealed earlier this year.

Alfa Romeo to target 5 Series and E-Class with new large sedan – report

A fresh report out of Spain claims Alfa Romeo has plans to take on the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6 with a new large sedan.

According motor.es, the Italian firm is plotting a fresh-faced large sports sedan, set to slot in above the Giulia (as a long-awaited successor to the 166, perhaps?) and complete with a coupé-like sloping roofline.

The publication claims while the model is still in the “design phase”; it is expected to be revealed in 2024, with sales starting the following year.
