The Alfa Romeo Giulia Thread

New BMW M3 vs Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

Both have notable grilles and 503bhp. But which should you have?

The BMW wins this contest. It is not only relentlessly fast and capable, but in its steering and chassis control, downright remarkable. The Alfa wilts before this onslaught, but its comparative frailties give it more recognisable human qualities. It’s the sort of car that gets a bit out of shape and out if its depth and makes you grin and forgive it because you know it’s trying its best. Plus it’s easy to forgive something so beautiful. I’d entirely understand if that did it for you – it very nearly does for me – the QV is the more sophisticated, more heartfelt machine. But it feels a generation behind now. And this new M3 is a deeply satisfying car. Careful how you spec it and how you use it. You’ll look a bigger prat getting it wrong in this than you will the Alfa.

Super-saloon shootout: BMW M3 vs AMG E63 and Alfa Giulia QV

The M3 has become bigger, more powerful and very expensive for a car of its size. Perhaps, then, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio needn’t worry as much as the Mercedes-AMG E63 S

This might not be a convenient truth, but the G80 could even be the best M3 there has been in nearly two decades, running all the way back to the revered E46. Look at the styling and that grille how you like. You can’t deny that you’re looking, as its designers might point out, but looking is only one thing. The defining, word-perfect, BMW M driving experience really is something else entirely.

Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio to be discontinued, report suggests

Now that Alfa Romeo, along with the rest of the FCA brands, is under the ownership of the Stellantis group, it has been reported that the Giorgio platform that underpins the Giulia and Stelvio will be discontinued soon.

According to Automotive News Europe, brand CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato said these two cars will be replaced by new models that use the “STLA large” architecture during a roundtable with Italian media on Wednesday. Imparato added that all future Alfa Romeos will be electrified in some way, be it a full EV powertrain or petrol/diesel electric.

“If you are not electrified, you are dead,” he said.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares added that the FCA will use four electrified platforms across the 14-brand group. These will consist of small, medium and large cars and act as a frame for high-margin SUVs and bakkies.

The end of the Giorgio platform marks the end of the rear-wheel and all-wheel drive architecture that we first saw in 2014 under Fiat Chrysler Automobile headed by the now late Sergio Marchionne as part of a plan to turn Alfa Romeo into a global challenger against the likes of the big German manufacturers.

Sad news, as this platform is fantastic, but I guess it is too expensive to produce, think about it CF propshaft, etc. I know the new Maserati will still use this platform maybe the price can justify it.

The Top Gear car review:

Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA

Verdict

Final thoughts and pick of the range

Alfa's love letter to the fast saloon doesn't make rational sense, but it doesn't matter: it's very, very special

If you just wanted to be the fastest car at a trackday, you’d go and buy a Radical and have done with it. But that’s not what Alfa Romeo has done here. In pretty much all metrics, these Giulias do not make much sense. But they’re built by engineers as a very expensive, fun-having exercise. If you’re being brutal, the straight GTA will be the more coherent one to have, the more useful, the more responsible. But when you’re talking about an Alfa Guilia that costs the same as a nice semi-detached house in some parts of the UK, who wants sensible? Top Gear would likely order a GTAm and just take the hit on the Christmas cards…

The GTA is … proper. A fun, exciting, invigorating, special piece of engineering. It’s not particularly rational, but the best things in life tend not to be.

Stellantis boss pledges 10-year investment plan for Alfa Romeo

Italian firm has been given a decade to succeed under the leadership of ex-Peugeot boss Jean-Philippe Imparato

Alfa Romeo will be given 10 years of long-term investment and backing to succeed by Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares.

Alfa is one of 14 brands in Stellantis, which was formed earlier this year after the merger between FCA and PSA. Former Peugeot boss Jean-Philippe Imparato has moved across to lead Alfa and Tavares said of the Italian firm: “We will do what needs to be done to be highly profitable with the right technology.”

Speaking at the Financial Times' Future of the Car Summit, Tavares said: “In the past, lots of other car companies were willing to buy Alfa. In the eyes of those buyers, it has a great value. They are right. It has a great value.”

Alfa’s 10-year plan is still to be decided but Tavares said it will inevitably involve electrification but also a continued focus on driving dynamics.

Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm 2021 review

Should I buy one?

It is not often that Alfa Romeo takes on the might of Audi Sport, BMW M and Mercedes-AMG with its own style of performance car. But in this case, we are pleased it has. The Giulia GTA is a car to savour.

It builds handsomely on the Giulia Quadrifoglio with a dramatic appearance, greater performance, a terrific exhaust note and wonderfully engaging handling – all in combination with the sort of ride quality that allows you to use it every day. It is Alfa Romeo's most thrilling road car in years.

Alfa Romeo to receive 10-year investment plan under Stellantis group

Alfa Romeo will be undergoing a 10-year investment plan in an attempt to keep the historic Italian brand alive as the automotive industry transitions into a more eco-friendly state. Detailed by the Stellantis Group boss Carlos Tavares, the decade-long strategy aims to turn the brand into one that is highly profitable under the watchful eye of the recently appointed former Peugeot boss Jean-Philippe Imparato.

As reported by Autocar, Tavares hinted this plan for Alfa Romeo at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit. He said, “In the past, lots of other car companies were willing to buy Alfa. In the eyes of those buyers, it has a great value. They are right. It has a great value.”

The 10-year plan still needs to be decided by Tavares but it’s highly likely that it will involve electrification without any compromise on driving dynamics.

“We need to improve the way we talk to potential customers. There is a disconnect with products, history and who we’re talking to. We need to fix the distribution and understand to whom we’re talking and which brand promise we’re talking to them about. It will take some time to get it right.

New hope for an Alfa GTV revival? New boss very interested

It seems Alfa Romeo loves playing with its fans’ emotions, particularly when it comes to lusted after nameplates like GTV.

Back in 2018 the Italian carmaker told us that it would be reviving the GTV as part of a five-year plan that also included a successor for the 8C. Then later in 2019 Alfa Romeo killed these dreams by confirming that the aforementioned five-year plan was dead in the water.

Which means we’re not holding our breath at the prospect of the GTV ever being resurrected, but according to a new report it appears that Alfa Romeo’s new boss seems to like the idea. Jean-Philippe Imparato recently told Australian publication Carsales that he was “very interested” in the GTV.

“There is no statement or announcement at this stage, but I’m just giving you a personal feeling that I’m very interested in the GTV,” the Alfa Romeo boss said. During the discussion he also reportedly expressed interest in the Duetto (AKA Spider).

Alfa Romeo to revive GTV as an EV in sweeping range renewal

Electric coupé to top a potential line-up of three SUVs, saloon, supermini and Spider

Alfa Romeo is plotting a revival of the GTV as an electric four-door coupé flagship under a sweeping revival plan that will include a major revamp of its model line-up, Autocar has learned.

Seen as a technological flagship for Alfa Romeo’s future line-up, the modernday GTV is one of a number of proposed new models being considered by the Italian brand’s new CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, to spearhead its embracing of electrification and other key technologies.

“There’s no announcement at this stage, but [in] the GTV I’m very interested,” said Imparato, the former Peugeot boss who took control of Alfa Romeo in January.

Autocar has been told that proposals for the revival of the GTV extend from a retro-inspired two-door coupé to a contemporary four-door coupé in the mould of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, with both electrified combustion engine and pure-electric drivetrains possible.
