The Alkaline Diet

I'll agree with the diet blu is on yeah I I'm with you on that. Poor deluded girl who bought some smucksters book:)
But let me tell you Food science studies are also well outdated in many many areas. - look for example at todays typical dieticians- they are trained to the obsolete food pyramids (funny that was revised not so long ago eh?) But anyway our knowledge is changing all the time. If I had to state what the biggest threat to our food supply was I'd say the lack of minerals in our soils. That and GMO seed, false labelling and Chinese tampering.

I like to think that I stay up to date on food science. I argue consistently with supposed dieticians and in fact I promote the intake of certain fats, which really peeves some of them off. Some of them did a few courses in uni and haven't bothered to stay up to date with things.

GMO foods I have dealt with time and time again. We've been eating GMO since farming became commercial thousands of years ago already...

Most professors have to write all manners of nonsense and tomes that would send a narcoleptic into a coma... just to stay tenured.
and secondly Big Pharma *surprise* does sponsor University medical research. Do you have a crystal ball? How do you know they are not getting paid. Just like Doctors get silly pens and plastic rubbish to clutter their desks, Professors at the universities do get invited to present papers at conferences overseas. These are incentives - just like the Doctors get. All inclusive paid vacations. In fact I am following a stem cell case at Sheffield University quite closely and instead of actually getting on with the ****king work the researchers are too busy presenting at conferences.
No tenure means you cannot be terminated without just cause. Once you are tenured you can publish what you like regardless of who it pisses off. That is the whole purpose of tenure, to protect academics when they investigate topics that big interest groups or superiors at the institution might have a personal bias against.

I'm sorry you find all this sciencey stuff boring an incomprehensible. I suppose it isn't for everyone. That doesn't mean it is bullschit though or that Big Pharma is pushing it.

Sure pharmaceutical companies do sometimes sponsor research. That of course must ethically be disclosed in any publication resulting from that research. However there is plenty that isn't funded by pharmaceutical companies. Pharmaceutical companies are not the only ones that do this sort of research as you previously claimed.

Cellulose is a polysaccharide, a carbohydrate, not a protein. It doesn't contain amino acids it contains sets of beta-D-glucose residues.

Which is not to say it wouldn't be nice to be able to break those beta-D-glucose (1-4) glycosidic linkages. That would be great, could get energy from grass :p. Still I'm not sure how that relates to not getting enough protein from soya stuff. Except perhaps that you wouldn't be able to break down cell walls heavily impregnated with cellulose and so would be unable to extract the proteins from the cells within. I'm not sure if cells with cellulose rich cell walls would always make it through your digestive tract but I imagine many would.

What do you think wheatgrass is? The cellulose has been crushed by the powerful cold extractor hydraulic juicer engine-the pulp extracted is as dry as a towel, and this grass juice energy is absorbed by the body. Same with Chickpeas? soaking then cooking quickly with bicarb which removes the outer cellulose shell and boiling away makes a hummus that's easier to digest.

Absolutely, but often with these sorts of diets seeds, nuts and salads are promoted and it is laughable. All you're effectively doing is starving your body of nutrients which is why people tend to binge after a diet. Vicious cycle as your body literally demands of you that you make up for certain lost nutrients...

The heating breaks the b-D-glucose bonds in the veggies. You don't need bicarb. Invest enough energy and any bond will break. This is why it is stupid to eat raw veggies or grass or something. The point is to break the cellulose up because humans cannot digest it, we simply don't possess the enzymes required to break those (1-4) bonds.

Even cows don't themselves produce the enzymes required to break down cellulose.

This has fsck all to do with bicarb and its alkalinity though. I assure you not everything to do with chemistry and biochemistry does.

Take a look at this Article re: tenure published last year http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303610504577418293114042070.html

The only reason bicarb is used with chick-peas really is to prevent the calcium in the chick-pea's cell walls from bonding the pectin molecules together...

Invest enough energy (heat) and you destroy all the micronutrients. It's absolutely not stupid to grow and juice wheatgrass you just need the right equipment to break and extract the juice from the cellulose and keep away from cheap heat centrifugal juicers and drink before it oxidises. As for bicarb it's just a quick way to remove the cellulose from chickpeas which would otherwise take an inordinate amount of time over the stove - then you have to peel them by hand. in the bicarb method one just cooks them drained mixed with a bit of bicard and then adds water and scoops out all the foam and skins.

That is all opinion with no real stats relating to the issue and so is pretty much worthless. Tell me do you often reach conclusions based on opinion pieces containing little to no actual data?

Strangely enough though it does point out that professors are spending tons and tons of time producing research in order to get tenure. Which of course doesn't bode well for your strange claim that only pharmaceutical companies do the research.

You are talking about heat strong enough to undo the fundamental laws of physics.

No for all practical levels of heat there are plenty of micronutrients that will survive the heat. Iron and chromium for example.

Please think before you make weird statements like that.

No. Not so. It depends on many things. I am growing and enjoying sunflower sprouts- and I have massive fresh salads every day and if avos weren't so damn expensive I'd have them daily along with my wonderful olive oils and salts. I drink wheat grass and I make Almond milk. I hydrate and I use a greens supplement. I have been full of energy and my blood sugar is not subject to vicious spikes. As I mentioned earlier in the thread I am "in transition" The next step for me will be to go gluten free and sugar free but slowly. I found a potatoe and sweet potatoe flour bread that doesn't taste bad at all. No wheat no Gluten. I guarantee you I am getting more nutrients and better quality ones than I ever did then when I slapped a rack of ribs on the braai . Still I refuse to go without my cup of Burundian Freshly Ground and toasted cheese sandwich and But my tastebuds will come back to life.

To quote Bill Clinton
The former president says he really enjoys what he eats now, and doesn't miss the fast food at all. "I like the vegetables, the fruits, the beans, the stuff I eat now," said Clinton, whose weight hovers at around 185 pounds -- his weight at age 13!

"All my blood tests are good, and my vital signs are good, and I feel good. I also have more energy."
Clinton switched to a plant-based diet in 2011

Where can one buy almond milk locally ?

You know all you seem to be interested in is stats stats studies and more stats. You kind of need to relax your splincter and kick back a bit and just chill while understanding the concept of micronutrients and cooking

Read this. It's more your style.http://tinyurl.com/crw4r4h

Not sure about store-bought but I think I am going to try home-made just out of curiosity. Seems easy enough.

http://vegetarian.about.com/od/rawfoodsrecipes/r/almondmilk.htm

Yeah store bought not easily available without preservatives. I don't know the price of bulk raw unsalted almonds up North but they are not cheap here. One tip soak overnight as they will blend better- what you really need is a blender like a vitamix
and strain with muslin.

Opinion pieces don't usually contain "actual data" otherwise the'd be Studies wouldn't they?

.

So nothing to say Big Pharma isn't assisting Professors-- so by default they are doing the research too.
Has a Pharmaceutical/biology/ medical company cut you a cheque lately?

Yea you are right my sentence contained some redundancy. Doesn't change my point though.

Your English isn't the best here but it looks like you are now implying that I am also part of the conspiracy though.

I also see you have now shifted the goalposts. No longer is Big Pharma the only one doing the research now it is doing the research too alongside the various academics not being funded by Big Pharma. I must congratulate you on your attempt to hide that you have now changed what you were saying but unfortunately I noticed it ;)

Of course I want stats and studies. How else do you suggest I generate an opinion on something... voodoo? A seance?

First you present an opinion piece as though it carries weight and now you point out that I want support for opinions held in the form of stats and studies as though it is a bad thing. I find this concerning.

Right there in the first few lines of the intro: "However, the bioavailability of some minerals, for example iron, may be increased by cooking (Lee and Clydesdale, 1981).".

You claimed all micronutrients are destroyed (note not removed, destroyed, which is even worse but I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you just meant removed) through high heat and yet here they are in a study you apparently have access to and should have read, citing the same micronutrient example I pulled off the top of my head from memory. I'm not the one that needs to read up on micronutrients.

Please think things through before you post them and please always read the sources you post first to make sure they actually support your claims.

You do realise this study is from 1997 right?

Lets try not to stray too far off the beaten track shall we? I'd hate to have to send Blu out looking for you with a whistle.

Come to think of it, I don't w a n t your opinion. You're too closed minded.

I don't know how your brain works but from casual observation it's pretty rigid and you work to a particular system but if something's not accepted mainstream or is out of your comfort zone with too little data to back it up you immediately call "conspiracy theory" and imply (in my case,) that I think that Big Bad Pharma is the root of all evil. Well Big Pharma has its uses but like everything in life its about the money. If you read up on the materials mentioned earlier in the thread a lightbulb will pop on in your brain and you may well be going hmmm. Maybe there is something to this New Biology after all.
Don't haggle me for info. As I said go and look it up yourself. Nobody cares whether you do or don't but there's enough case studies floating around to lend credibility to a new way of living- Alkaline. The basis upon which we need to build new blood and we accomplish this (and I pulled this from a random web site )
The main building block for your blood that you are going to want to consume is green, chlorophyll rich vegetables. Mainly green leafy vegetables. Some good sources are spinach, collards, kale, Swiss chard and mustard greens. Others include asparagus, beet greens, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cucumbers, egg plant, green squash, green beans, peas, green peppers and sprouts. Anything that is green.
Whether the study I pulled randomly from the net is from 1973 or 1997 it doesn't matter. Heat will change micronutrients. That's why we Juice and eat as raw as possible and it's expensive but then again at what price do you put good health? Big Pharma wants to sell you pills and potions to manage your diabetes, to raise or lower your blood pressure, to get your dick up or down, to make you happy, to make you sleep, to make to wake, and even to make you walk around like a zombie. The list is endless but if we eat right and hydrate right and start by building new blood and alkalizing our bodies we actually can reverse a lot mid life medical problems which have caught up with us since childhood- especially diabetes .(and Big Pharma doesn't like this- no conspiracy- just common sense) There are documented case studies in Young's book The PH miracle for Diabetes - the Revolutionary Diet plan for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and yes people have cured themselves.
I don't personally care what anyone thinks. The FDA is in bed with the drug manufacturers and sorry, I can't get the data for you but if you read around you'll find enough circumstantial evidence.
Full disclosure: I have no personal vested interest in any of this, but I've seen enough to remain convinced of the benefits and hell why not give it a go... and that's pretty strong coming from one of the worst skeptics I know- me.
