The Alkaline Diet

Thanks, that is very helpful.

How is that helpful? He just said the entire medical field is one big conspiracy and therefore we should assume that this diet works. The mental gymnastics involved to go from claim A to conclusion B could win Olympic medals. The protein aspects is also nonsense...

Look, I'll keep it simple because if you have a geninue interest and are not of the old school stagnant mindset- You'll get the answers yourself. I recommend you start with your open minded thinking on the New Biology. Go and familarise yourself with a copy of the PH Miracle by Robert O. Young, Ph.D,. and if you really want to understand more of the science of the theory you can review it there. Most if not All your above questions are answered and if not ask him yourself.
I don't want a book I want scientific studies demonstrating the claimed links between dietary intake and pH in the pancreas. I want studies demonstrating the causal link between acid:alkaline ratios of food intake and declining bodily pH values. I'm not aware of any such studies.

Find me those and I will re-evaluate my stance. Anybody can say anything they want in a book.

Sure there have been some studies demonstrating increased cancerous cell growth in acidic pH but that is about it. Those are of course in vitro. You can't infer in vivo from in vitro results. That isn't science that is quackery. Show me in vivo results.

something as dangerously variable as acidity of your diet then you would be in serious trouble pretty quickly.

Talking about cows... I know as a farmer how cattle can develop acidosis and get in serious trouble pretty damn quicky, directly related to diet and the amount of grain they eat. (yes, I know we don't have a rumen, but still the consequences on the rest of the body from the acidity in the rumen can be deadly in a very short time...) Treatment can be as simple as bicarb.

Robert Young is a pseudo-science bullschitting fraud. Just 'cos it's in a book doesn't make it true. This theory, and Robert Young have been debunked by actual medical professionals (note, not those pretending to be doctors, as Young was convicted of) for years already...

Just because it's a Wikipedia article doesn't make it true either. Just read a bit before you jump into the ring. Try this for a quick intro. Are all these people lying?http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dr-Robert-O-Young/105919901100 Young is a researcher- never claimed to be a Medical Doctor.

There had been an injunction placed on Young for several years by a huge US pharmaceutical Company and a massive trial - it is only now since 2006 that he has been back in the spotlight and why everyone wants a piece of the action.

You only make yourself look dim by proclaiming inane statements like that quoted above.

Don't be a dick. These studies are done by big pharma and cost megabucks. I doubt they've even been done yet. Just read the damn book.

I didn't read the wiki. I've looked at this nonsense before in my food science studies and I've looked at Robert Young and his work. It isn't peer-reviewed work. It is merely a series of claims, the conclusions of which have been thoroughly debunked.

Anyways - the diet blu is on is ridiculous in any case...

What about it?

It is a metal, it is needed by your body to create bone and is used in a few other tasks... good old calcium.

Yes thanks captain obvious.

Some say a high veg and fruit low acid diet without dairy actually improves bone strength.

Studies are not all paid for by big pharma. If you're going to argue everything on the basis of there being some global conspiracy, then there is no point in this debate any longer...

Do we attack it on the basis of these incomplete amino-acids being largely un-cooked and therefore insoluble in the human body (we do not have four stomachs like a cow to break down cellulose fibres)?
Cellulose is a polysaccharide, a carbohydrate, not a protein. It doesn't contain amino acids it contains sets of beta-D-glucose residues.

Which is not to say it wouldn't be nice to be able to break those beta-D-glucose (1-4) glycosidic linkages. That would be great, could get energy from grass :p. Still I'm not sure how that relates to not getting enough protein from soya stuff. Except perhaps that you wouldn't be able to break down cell walls heavily impregnated with cellulose and so would be unable to extract the proteins from the cells within. I'm not sure if cells with cellulose rich cell walls would always make it through your digestive tract but I imagine many would.

As I mentioned before your bone can be used as a reservoir for elements required in the formation of alkaline buffers to buffer against acidic components. However this is going to be a last resort. Your body isn't going to routinely strip away at your skeleton just to prevent daily minor fluctuations in pH.

Calcium is calcium it doesn't matter if you are getting it from milk or veggies it can still be stripped out and bound with phosphates.

That is my understanding anyway, note I am not a dietician.

DJ, maybe I should just say to you that I am eating a lot of fruit and veg and cutting out most sugar, white flour, red meat and caffeine, cos that is in essence what it is. I can see if we use the word alkaline you get upset :D

Also remember, I posted a meal plan for 2 days. That does not mean that protein will not feature over the course of a week.

Got a little tangled in the message there, but the point is that most nutrients require the breakdown of the cellulose structures which we cannot do in raw form. Most plant-based cellulose cannot be broken down in the body and they pass straight through with little nutritional benefit. You touched on my argument there in that the cellulose literally cannot be broken down in the body and these (incomplete) amino acid strains never make it into your system...

I'm not sure if you are aware of this sort of thing but there are these institutions out there called "universities". These "universities" are packed to the rafters with academics that are not paid by Big Pharma and who consistently publish research in these sorts of fields and many others.

Visit your local university's science faculty and see what sort of things those academics are up to. I guarantee you someone in that building somewhere is testing something to do with "Big Pharma" (I just can't help but chuckle whenever someone uses that term).

Where on Earth did you get the idea that "Big Pharma" (OMG!!!!!!!@!!!) is the only one capable of performing these studies or that they are particularly expensive (as opposed to using existing infrastructure to monitor participants)?

I'll agree with the diet blu is on yeah I I'm with you on that. Poor deluded girl who bought some smucksters book:)
But let me tell you Food science studies are also well outdated in many many areas. - look for example at todays typical dieticians- they are trained to the obsolete food pyramids (funny that was revised not so long ago eh?) But anyway our knowledge is changing all the time. If I had to state what the biggest threat to our food supply was I'd say the lack of minerals in our soils. That and GMO seed, false labelling and Chinese tampering.

Oh I see what you mean there.

By incomplete amino acid residues you mean they are base hydrocarbon molecules. Oh for sure then I understand what you are saying. The body still has to invest energy into an oxidation process in order to convert those base hydrocarbon chains into amino acid residues complete with amino group and side chains.

OK gotcha. Sorry for the confusion. Totally my bad.

Most professors have to write all manners of nonsense and tomes that would send a narcoleptic into a coma... just to stay tenured.
and secondly Big Pharma *surprise* does sponsor University medical research. Do you have a crystal ball? How do you know they are not getting paid. Just like Doctors get silly pens and plastic rubbish to clutter their desks, Professors at the universities do get invited to present papers at conferences overseas. These are incentives - just like the Doctors get. All inclusive paid vacations. In fact I am following a stem cell case at Sheffield University quite closely and instead of actually getting on with the ****king work the researchers are too busy presenting at conferences.

Well you're cutting out sucrose and replacing it with fructose. You're not cutting out sugar. And fructose isn't necessarily better for you than sucrose, as recent research shows that pancreatic cancer, for example, might use fructose as its "fuel" in simplistic terms...

white flour

Cool. I'm also trying to cut out white flour on the basis of me consuming far too much sugar in the carb form already. But flour in its raw form is pretty pH neutral, however bleached flour will be alkaline due to the chlorine bleach. Still don't see the point of the whole alkaline thing though...

Why? Do you have severe blood pressure and heart issues? If not, then why? It's pretty good for you in moderate intake. If you limit the fat intake then the LDL cholesterol impacts are infinitely smaller than eating a roasted chicken or your favourite Nandos. And you can balance LDL with higher HDL fat intake. Red meat has an undue bad rep - the stuff is a fantastic source of protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B...

Awesome. First good decision you've made so far...:D

I can see if we use the word alkaline you get upset :D

What you just described will have no impact on your pH levels. So you're just on a diet with a fad-name. A fad that has no basis in science...

Also remember, I posted a meal plan for 2 days. That does not mean that protein will not feature over the course of a week.

Your body needs protein each and every day. What is the point of starving it of protein for a few days?
