a better South Africa with free education, free electricity, free water and sanitation had not been realised
Free free free. Everything For Free. EFF

Many of the locals have demanded a flat rate, saying the proposed prepaid system will not work

Will not work for who?

A march led by the African National Congress against the power cuts was to be held in Soweto on Thursday

Was or Is?

yeah, prepaid system should measure according to usage, not a flat rate.
but correct info, being billed for actual usage, (that u can manage) is better than a flat rate that is likely to cost you more? they dont get it.
perhaps they just want a flat rate that will be lower than any practical usage... which still does not help the situation

The problem here is... ANC wants their votes. These are the people that vote for them. They will take the money from the (generally) economically active non-ANC voters and spend it on their voters to keep their vote.

I think flat rate tier could work in areas where there is already problems with payment (instead of getting 0% of funds they can manage it to 75%).. BUT this will come with the fact that the community would be cut off if as as a community they exceed the allotted capacity provisioned or non-payment. Kinda like how ISPs manage the uncapped accounts. I think this model may work as then Eskom will let the community fight with each other when payment is less and the entire community is cut off.. imagine the vigilantes :p Still, having to create such a system to cater for an entitled community shows how the ANC has screwed over the country, buying votes with state assets which belong to the state and not the ANC. Ask anyone in the townships or new housing project areas.. who gave you the house? The ANC or the Government of SA... 99% will say the ANC! which is complete bull as the ANC paid **** all.

Quick question, free electricity = probably one big unregulated mess of connections.
Now if everything is not connected properly, and a prepaid meter is installed, wouldn't most of these illegal connection be stealing electricity from those with prepaid meters.

Not only were they getting electricity for free, they were outright wasting it.

From the referenced article
Strange place to install your DSTV decoder

Dammit, thought I was the only one that noticed.

Anyways, the funniest thing of this whole saga is that the residents of Soweto want an apology for getting load shedded. FOR ELECTRICITY THEY DONT PAY FOR!

Hell, they even rent out shacks on their property, and utilise even more electricity!

I still maintain that Eksdom should just overload the entirety of Soweto, blow up all those lekker DSTV decoders, TVs and other luxuries that these people clearly cannot afford and be done with it. Do it every month and blame the illegal connections for the surge.

Yesterday a woman phoned into 702, explaining that her domestic worker stays in a house which has 6 shacks in the backyard, all of which running geyers, stoves, heaters, TVs with DSTV - all illegal connections via the main-house which also does not pay for basic services.

I feel sorry for the few who pay and have to suffer the consequences. It is obvious that your prepaid meter will run out if you use your stove as a heater in winter.

Has there ever been a more entitled township then Soweto, The amount of money government has pumped into that place you would think they would be the first to switch to metering. Have a family farm out in oskraal north west prrovine far removed from any civilization where drinking water is a constant issue fewer jobs and most people live day by day but even they use meters for electricity and don't complain. The citizen of Soweto need to take step back and appreciate the fact that it has been done earlier

If the ANC in fact made this promise, then the ANC is responsible. They should be held responsible.

Soweto is spoilt rotten. I grew up there, moved to orange farm and nothing has ever happened in orange farm development wise. The government has built outdoor rooms for free in Orlando, installed new toilet systems to almost all houses, paved the roads in orlando etc. all this happening and orange farm has got nothing. No road is untarred in soweto but all roads at least 95% of orange farm is untarred. Let it burn!!!!!!

“It’s sad he died without having had implemented those things,” the man told News24 on Wednesday.
Get it into your heads, even if he lived a thousand years you would never have gotten any of those things. The man was not a saint a plainly lied to get your votes. Now learn from that and make your mark but no, 99% of you will make the same vote come 2019.

“The ANC promised us free electricity”

Some of Soweto’s residents feel entitled to free electricity as it was one of the things promised to them when the country gained democracy in 1994.
They get 100kWh FBE
joburg.org.za:

Free basic electricity:
City Power provides 100 kWh of free basic electricity to indigent households in Joburg every month. City Power was one of the first utilities to introduce free basic electricity as part of the national commitment to ensuring that all South Africans have access to electricity.
You just have to prove that you are indigent.

The issue is that they all want all their electricity for free.
(even if they can afford it)
