It is possible that Tongo said these things just to lessen his own jail sentence yes, but on the other hand: those cellphone records .... surely his version can be backed up with info from the relevant cellphone service provider?

a damning indictment - in the 'cougar' case the 'foreign' hitmen went to the cops - a local person just accepts such a 'heinous' job... I mean, it's unbelievable that you can pick a random taxi driver at the airport to carry out a hit - this whole case stinks

Remember the eastern cape dude who had his pregnant wife murdered/or the baby. He walked to a taxi rank & found a couple of random guys to shoot his wife too. I think there's more than one case of taxi rank hitmen. I think even the kid who murdered his parents for inheritance got his hit men from a taxi rank.

Yup, we're an appalling people.

R15000 is quite possibly a lot of money to them. Although it looks to me like it's a case of hire cheap amateurs you get a cheap amateur job.

I'm not convinced you could walk up to a random person on the street to arrange a hit though. Certain people yes. Particularly someone that probably lives in a place where they're in close proximity to criminals.

Well you can, you just end up with these kinds of "hit men". They're common criminals not professionals or even real hit men.

The court documents (on mg.co.za) allege that Tongo was in a very bad financial situation, hence why he was moonlighting, and Dewani used this to his advantage.

I was about to point this out. But you've got it wrong, Tongo is Congolese according to reports. He's an immigrant in SA even though he apparently got his Matric here. I'm wondering if it's even true any more, but quite a few article said he was from the Congo and his name sounds about right.

This leads one to believe that they spend a reasonable amount of time in each other's company, else how would Dewani have known about Tongo's financial woes? It is not something you volunteer to a virtual stranger.

Furthermore, if he was in such dire straits, why was he willing to accept a meagre R1 000 as payment for his dirty work? Makes little sense.

Since you referred to the court document, I have to add that one of the oddest things I read in that document is that Tongo's age (31) is listed as a mitigating factor. 31 is not exactly the age of innocence.

Haha ye I also thought that was weird when I read it, but I suppose it ties in with the fact that he had no prior convictions which is listed a little later on. Maybe also that he only had Matric even when he was 31. It's probably just one of those things you list for clarity.

Nothing.

At the time they allowed him to leave, they probably did not have sufficient evidence to arrest him.

SA will request the UK to extradite Dewani to stand trial in SA. The other thread (to which I referrred you earlier) contains more debate on the extradition issue.

As Mickey said, Tongo received an 18 year jail sentence today. What happens to Dewani and the other 2 accused will not impact on Tonga's sentence.

Remember, more than one person can be found guilty of murdering the same victim, because in this case they colluded in advance and it is thus a case of 4 people having had a common purpose.

You're saying that if I go outside now and ask the first person I see to kill someone for me there is a high probability they'll say yes. I doubt it. In this case I'd say he picked someone he thought would go for the money.

Someone desperate for money will take whatever they can get. And R1000 is a lot of money to some people. It is also quite probable that because he was not doing the actual killing he did not view his involvement as equally serious.
 
I have no idea which thread to ask questions anymore :/

I haven't read the court documents, so not sure if this was covered : was Anni aware Shrien was involved at the highjacking? Would the other two guys simply have said 'guys - you can leave' and Anni knew during her last minutes she'd been setup?
